There is no doubt that organist Marie-Claire Alain is one of the great organists of the twentieth century. This particular recording has just about every organ encore piece on it that you can think of, from Bach's "Toccata and Fugue in D Minor," to Widor's "Toccata from Symphony #5." Of course, if I never heard these two pieces again, it would not be a bad thing as they are so over-recorded. The only problem with a CD of huge encore pieces, is Alain's choice of the instrument which is about a 48 rank 1980 Mathis & Fils tracker! Horrors! This thing screeches and burps, and I feel is totally unsuited for this amount of mostly large romantic encore works. The playing, of course, is impeccable, and the registrations are what they are. It is too bad that Alain chose this instrument, but "tracker-backers" will love it!Read full review
