This is Charlie Kaufman's debut as a director. His screenwriting credits include "Being John Malkovich", "Adaptation", "Confessions of a Dangerous Mind" and "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind." All of his screenplays are funny, complex, innovative and brilliant. "Synecdoche, New York" is all of those and more. It is, as the punnish title indicates, a synecdoche: one man's life representing all lives, or to be more precise, the second half of all lives. It is very funny and very sad, as life tends to be. Of it's many ideas, the simplest is this: If the unexamined life is not worth living, the overexamined life may not be living at all. If you are unhappy with your life, this movie will probably depress you. If you are in complete denial about the inevitability of death, you will probably hate this film. If you are still a child, you will probably be bored by this film. If you appreciate brilliant writing and acting, you will love this film. The fact that Sean Penn was chosen over Philip Seymour Hoffman as best actor is more proof, if any was needed, that the Oscars are about money and politics. The fact that the screenplay wasn't even nominated indicates that not only are most American movies aimed at teenagers, apparently the nominating committee of the AMPAS is made up of people with the brains of teenagers. "Synechdoche, New York" is a masterpiece within a masterpiece within, etc. It will be looked back upon as one of the greatest films ever, ranked with "Citizen Kane", "Chinatown" and "Casablanca."Read full review
Charles Kaufman is amazing. I bought this dvd film to witness Philip Seymour Hoffman, and wasn't disappointed. Like Roger Ebert reviews said, Watch it twice! Repeat view uncovers more layered nuances of the story. Very good copy at a very good price..

This movie has to be watched at least 3 times...What an amazing piece of Cinematic genius. I haven't watched a movie in so long that actually made me think about my own life in the way that this movie did, I cried and cried at the truths and dissapointments in my own life that I could totally relate to in this movie.I will indeed watch this movie over and over again, finding new things I didn't or wasn't aware of. Amazing,amazing.....
Found this quirky sounding movie (from the strange name of the city in New York) with the name that sounds quite the same but spelled differently. Even it's meaning gives the movie an even more enigmatic term!! I hadn't heard of it before. I think I noticed it listed here on ebay when searching for another movie title, I noticed Phillip Seymor Hoffman was in it and of course a great list of other amazing actors and actresses, was able to find it to rent, completely fell in love with it and decided I had to have it!!
Awesome movie. Philip Seymour Hoffman was brilliant,
