  • Good for its age

If this is the best processor available for your motherboard chipset then go for it. If building a new system I wouldn't consider something this old. Also, comparing it to the competition at the time, AMD processors will outperform it at a lower clock speed. All said, it was fun to build an out of date HP xw8600 spec computer, but I have no intention to utilize this old hardware in any stressful environment, only to perform manual backups of my primary computer system. Dual x5492 scored me 688 in the multi-thread cinebench, a little below my AMD powered HP xw9400 system at 708. Single threaded performance is quite low, however, so the average user would probably be better off with any single dual or quad core processor of the current generation instead. Single-threaded cinebench score was 93, which puts it ahead of the AMD six-core processors it competed with back nearly a decade ago.

  • Great Legacy Chip for Dell CS23-ShH Blade!

I was looking to upgrade the factory chips in my Dell CS23-SH blade: two Xeon E5462 @ 2.8GHz. The server is used as a game-hosting machine and the sub-3GHz was starting to really cramp my style. The Xeon X5492 chips are the highest tier in the family of chips the CS23-SH can support and they do not disappoint! A quick swap on the motherboard, some new thermal paste and my server is running at a solid 3.4GHz max on all cores, a marked improvement over the previous configuration. If you can grab these legacy chips at a good price they're definitely worth it!

  • Fastest CPU for the Seaburg chipset

can't go wrong if trying to extend the life of that LGA771 Seaburg chipset motherboard. A pair in my Supermicro X7DWA-N + 64GB Fully Buffered memory still makes a powerful workstation, even by todays standards!!
