The AMD Athlon 64 3800+ 2.4GHz Processor is a great entry level processor of the AM2 socket family. My motherboard has the capability of handling AM2 and AM3 socket processors from AMD, but I am unable to afford a higher end 64 bit processor at this time. I know from work that Microsoft products, especially Vista and it's sub-programs run with much more stability on a 64-bit platform. Thus, the Athlon 64 3800+ has given me the base processor to begin my journey, and I will venture into multi-threaded, multi-core processors, upgrading my motherboard as I can afford it. Great value and great speed for someone trying to get away from their old Pentium 4 / Athlon Gen6 system.
Pros: 64-bit right out of the box, Integrated DDR2 controller, SIMD Instructions 1-3, Virtualization Cons: 512K Cache, Single-Core (not meant to be a dual-core though) Other Thoughts: Smacks down most Pentium 4 processors (except high-end P4 with 2MB L2 Cache). HD playback can be an issue if your memory and video card capabilities are limited. Efficient and really takes multitasking to a whole new level. Handles games really well and overclocking is a breeze. It's worth the money if you don't need dual-core processing and not too many applications take advantage of the full potential of a dual, triple or quad-core processor.
I had an aging dell that i wanted to see if i could turn into an acceptable htpc. Being limited to single core means cpu is a major bottleneck. This cpu is 400mhz faster than the one i replaced. Not enough to make a major difference in performance but for the price i figured why not. The cpu arrived into great condition and the system booted right up on the first try. I've also not had any crashes or stability issues at all. Had a dell c521: -upgraded from Athlon 2.0ghz cpu to 24ghz -added an HD 7470 1gb ddr3 -6gb ddr2 800mhz ram -pcie sata card to add achi support {system only supported IDE} -added pci wireless card -7200 rpm sata II hard drive -OS: windows vista 32bit & windows 7 64bit & windows 10 64bit (because why not).

Great CPU to replace my old motherboard/CPU set as they had stopped functioning. Was able to pick this up used for a song and drop it in a motherboard that had built in NVIDIA and such. A little CPU goop, a heat sink, and I'm in business once again. Windows recognizes that "enough" changed and needed to be re-activated.
This CPU installed easily and performs very well. Meets and exceeds my expectations.

Simple way to gain speed. Reasonably priced and easy to install. Took more time to take the side off the computer than to change out the processor.
