Saxon math programs produce confident students who are not only able to correctly compute, but also to apply concepts to new situations. These materials gently develop concepts, and the practice of those concepts is extended over a considerable period of time. This is called "incremental development and continual review." Material is introduced in easily understandable pieces (increments), allowing students to grasp one facet of a concept before the next one is introduced. Both facets are then practiced together until another one is introduced. This feature is combined with continual review in every lesson throughout the year. Excellent program!
We used Saxon math for our kids through high school. In fact, we have another curriculum we use for everything else and when we saw how well Saxon prepared our older kids for the ACT, we scrapped that curriculum's included math and started buying Saxon from the early grades for our littles. Have you ever experienced the situation, in math, where you'd learned how to do a problem, but then a couple months later, you couldn't remember how to complete that kind of problem any more? That doesn't happen with Saxon because one learns how to do a new type of problem and gets one of those problems each day for the rest of the year.
