  • 2008 Mac Pro 3, 1 1186

This was one of Apple’s highest achievements in the computer world at the time and by far is still a cream of the crop. It is sturdy built and ease of accessibility to components inside the computer made it my favorite. Of course, the overall technology has changed, but these are still great computers even with certain upgrades to date. The design speaks for itself for the casing material and craftsmanship. It’s not to be under estimated for the process speed is quick and very quick when upgraded to SSD. I definitely enjoyed it!!!

  • Bang for the buck!

Very affordable Mac. This 2008 Mac Pro still runs everything! Upgrading parts is very affordable as well. Load this up with 16GB (can use 32GB total) for smoother operation. It is also a very handsome machine to show off. The older Mac Pro's were very well engineered with thought and care for longevity and forward thinking. I highly recommend this machine (2008-2012 editions) for productivity. Gaming on these is not recommended due to lack of Direct X suite. I bought mine for music production and music related usage. I paid 325 USD plus shipping. I am very satisfied. Despite the age, this is a very adequate machine for my needs. It has server grade parts and this is why these machines last. I'm running OSX El Capitan and I don't have all the maintenance required by a Windows OS. If you need muscle for productivity type of applications this is right for you. But be aware not all Mac Pro's run the latest OSX. Mac Pro 2006-2007 (1,1 -2,1) will only run up to OS X Lion (10.7). Mac Pro 2008-2009 (3,1 and 4,1) will only run up to El Capitan. If your serious about running the latest Mac OS Sierra you will have to pony up the big bucks for a 2010-2012 model. I'm happy with my 2008 as my music applications still support El Capitan 10.11.

  • Mac Pro early 2008

I receive the item well packed (styrofoam peanuts a little messy as always) and in perfect condition. The machine is very clean with only a slight scratch on the side which was in the pictures when listed. It started up perfectly, runs quietly, and a password was attached to the top of the machine printed bold-large type. I have this machine and mine is on its last legs so I wanted a replacement to keep using old hardware on. I couldn't be more satisfied.

  • A winner for me!

The only drawback is the bluetooth. The machine is fast (even faster with the 32 gig memory upgrade, and it will be faster yet if I decide to upgrade to an ssd base drive and use the scsi as a data drive). The scsi card is as informed ... errors ... but the drive works very well. I'll try to find the parts I need to rework the scsi card but it's not necessary.

  • They don't make them like this anymore

This thing is a tank! It is big and can be a little loud at times. It is beautifully crafted and powerful. Even after all these years I decided to buy one recently. I run Mac OS 10.4 on it and plan on porting some open source games. If you do decide to buy it remember that it is very big and heavy. I would avoid leaving it on the floor because chairs can damage its wonderful finish. It is very upgradeable. I only needed to upgrade the storage. A SSD will make this computer fly!

  • Old but still packs a punch

These older mac pro 3,1 machines run Xeons from the Core2 era of processors. Don't let it fool you, they still run like champions and can be made quicker with flash storage attached to the pcie bus and loading out with cheap memory. These macs are great on expansion, something Apple decided to forget for a while, which is extremely unfortunate. 4 drive bays, can still put a beastly graphics card in it, really doesn't run very loud due to big fans in it. Yes, it's not as fast as a current i-series xeon, but it doesn't kill your wallet like one either.

  • Excellent Computer

This is an incredible box to run with! It has the kick of all but a high end newer computer in most of its features. The 8 Core 3.0 Ghz processor packs a huge punch, the 24GB Ram will run almost anything on the market, and a 1 TB hard drive is definitely a solid start. The tower has four slots for a hard drive, so adding more disk space is easy if you need it. The only low end on this system is its graphics card. The old GeForce 8800 is fine for regular operations, but doesn't pack much of a punch for newer games. Luckily, this is also easily replaceable, and a large number of graphics cards are available to swap in. All in all, this was worth every penny, and can outperform many newer computers on the market for a fraction of the cost!

  • Mac Pro 3,1 Great Value

I almost don't want to leave this review because I don't want the value of these to increase. I know a little bit about computers but I am no expert by any means. I did a bit of research on used Mac Pros and found that they are generically great units and easy to upgrade. I found one on craigslist and upgraded the ram, replaced the hard drive with SSDs in a RAID striped configuration, and cloned it onto an external hard drive. One day, it died. I had no idea why, but I found an identical one on eBay for a great price. All I had to do was swap out my RAM trays (that I had upgraded) and my hard drive sleds (also upgraded), and fired it up. Back up and running and I didn't even need to restore from a backup. I run 2 displays. One died. I swapped them out and found that the second monitor plug wasn't working so I bought an upgraded GPU on eBay. Back up to 2 displays. I also took that opportunity to add a USB 3.0 card. Just for fun, I decided to see if the old unit had a bad GPU. BINGO. I put the old card in it and now I have 2 Mac Pros. One WAY faster than thee other, but even the slower (single screen) unit is better than most PCs you can buy off the shelf sub $1000. I needed a computer for the kids anyway. All computers fail. This one is a great value because the market was flooded from designers and ad firms upgrading to newer equipment. Most parts are easily swappable and some are even cheap. RAM is still on the high side, but SSDs are lowering in price. USB 3.0 is cheap and easy to install. If any part of this machine fails, I am ready for it. It is a big beast, but that makes it easy to access. Again, I am no expert and I didn't even stay at a Holiday Inn last night. If I can do this stuff anyone can.

  • Single processor Mac Pro

Thought it was the dual processor machine. Found a second processor for 20$ on eBay and put it in the spare slot and bingo, now a dual processor machine with eight cores. Upgraded to 16 go of ram and the machine flies. Processes video files very handily...nice machine and is in great shape. No regrets.

  • Old dog still going strong!!

Coming from 2008 duo core iMac I notice difference immediately. Takes longer to boot (even with SSD) but once booted it is FAST! I Unfortunately El Capitan is the last OS upgrade Apple plans to grant the 2008 machines... But I am using this for music production and it will definitely serve its purpose far better than the 08 iMac duo core.
