This is a sequel to "All the Pretty Horses" which was made into a fairly good movie. No movie can match a really good story as told by a gifted writer. Cormac McCarthy is the most powerful writer I have ever read. This tragic story about John Grady Cole is primarily a love story and a story about Mexico and the Border. "Cities of the Plain" refers to El Paso, Texas, and Juarez, Mexico as the Sodomm and Gomorrah of Southwestern United States. I had nightmares for two weeks after finishing "Cities." The knife fight that ultimately results in the death of John Grady takes me right into the scene and makes my mouth dry. I would recommend reading "All the Pretty Horses" and then "Cities of he Plain" because it is the continuing saga of John Grady Cole. These are two of the best novels I have ever read. They are comparable to "The Wonderful Country" by Tom Lea that was made into a movie starring Robet Mitchum.Read full review
This book finally puts the end cap on the Border Trilogy. All three books are quite good.
