About this product

Product Information

The Supermicro X8SIL-F motherboard is a high performance board for small business or home servers. The Supermicro X8SIL-F motherboard can offer onboard devices such as an Intel Xeon CPU socket, an Intel 3420 chipset, two Intel 82574L Gigabit Ethernet controllers, and integrated Intelligent Platform Management Interface (IPMI) 2.0. The CPU compatibility of the Supermicro X8SIL-F board is Intel Core i3-530 and Intel Xeon X3440, because of the Socket LGA 1156. The Supermicro has a different feature set than other motherboards, and since it is compatible with operating systems like Windows Home Server (V1 or V2 Vail), FreeNAS, and others, it can be perfect for a virtual machine or storage server. The Supermicro X8SIL-F also offers seven USB ports, six SATA ports, six SATA hard drives are supported, one VGA port, PS/2 keyboard and mouse ports, and three LAN ports. All of these connections can give the user plenty of flexibility for connecting other components, such an internal hard drives and external USB devices. Since it has a form factor of microATX, it could fit in your machine nicely, and since the IPMI interface lets you control it remotely, you can run it headless. That means your X8SIL-F board can be dedicated to providing services to other computers or used completely as a storage device and can be controlled via a local interface without needing to have keyboards, mice, or monitors hooked to the box. It supports up to 32GB DDR3 ECC of RAM and up to 16GB DDR3 ECC of unbuffered memory (UDIMM), but choose your CPU carefully and know what type of memory is supported, because this board does have limited memory-type available to it. Dual Core processors of Ci3 and Pentium, for instance, will only support ECC UDIMM. There are four 240 pin DDR3 gold-plated DIMM expansion slots which have a memory type of 1333, 1066, 800MHz ECC Registered, ECC Unbuffered DDR3 SDRAM 72 bit. You can choose DIMM sizes of 1GB, 2GB, 4GB or 8GB, as they are all supported. With the right memory and the right CPU, your board can be rock solid, and it can detect double bit errors and correct single-bit errors. You can hook up to five fans to this board to keep it cool. The BIOS type is a 32MB SPI Flash EEPROM with AMI BIOS and can provide USB keyboard support. The Supermicro X8SIL-F motherboard can be power efficient as well, offering Power configurations that include ACPI/ACPM Power Management, a main switch override mechanism, and keyboard wakeup from soft-off among others. It also provides PC health monitoring for the voltage, fan, and temperature. It can monitor for such things as CPU Cores, fan speed control status monitor, and chassis environment for temperature. It also has two LED lights that will light if the system overheats and will alert you when it is on standby. For a home or small business server or storage device, you can’t go wrong with this motherboard. It is solid and built to last.

  • Great little board, a lot of bang for the buck

I've got this motherboard running with a Xeon quad core, 16GB of ECC RAM, two Dell Perc H200 SAS cards, and a 10gbe Mellanox card. It's running freeNAS bare metal and is perfectly suited for this job. As it's an older generation platform, it's easy to put together a server for under $100. And performance-wise, it's fast enough to handle most server duties. The IPMI feature is also nice to have for remote control, reboots, and maintenance without ever touching the physical machine. Be aware that you must have "2Rx4" memory, which can be difficult to find.

  • Would definitely buy again. May buy again in the future for an offsite duplicate.

Need a NAS or some other type of server that isn't extremely compute heavy? This is for you. Not exactly a board for extremely heavy lifting (only one CPU socket), but for more storage or ram centric tasks, you can't beat it. DDR3 lets this board run cooler than any of the DDR2 boards available for a similar price on ebay. In fact, this replaced a DDR2 server that had overheating ram for less than I paid for the original machine. I got the bundle, and couldn't have found a better deal anywhere else. Running FreeNAS on it, and it performs like a dream. Also, there's an internal USB port(not just a header) right on the board, so if you want to boot from a USB stick inside the case, this will do it. Couldn't be happier.

  • Good board, wrong IO plate

Motherboard arrived in great and clean condition. Booted just fine with correct hardware. Only docked it one star because the IO plate did not match the motherboard. Minor issue.

  • Great for Freenas server

I bought this to build a cheap Freenas box, buying used parts helped me meet all specs like ECC RAM and still be cheaper than cheapest new config. Great value
