'The Thing' is one of my favorite films and I've seen it about thirty times or more, on VHS, DVD, television and now blu-ray. This is an excellent transfer, very clean and crisp picture and great sound. I did not notice any flaws in the copy, no dirt or film damage and almost no grain whatsoever; probably the best blu-ray transfer I've seen of anything shot on film, especially considering it is nearly 30 years old and looks better than transfers of stuff like 'Apollo 13' from '96. It is so clear that you can see a couple of shots where there was a drop of water on the camera lens, but I don't consider that a problem with the transfer. As other reviewers have noted, this disc contains the special features from the Collector's Edition dvd, but they seem to be available as Picture-in-picture only, which is a bit disappointing because the documentaries are worth watching full-screen by themselves so you can see the special effects shots, especially the alternate takes of some scenes like the final monster, which originally was a creature which looked mostly like Blair. In the film, I had never noticed before watching the blu-ray that the last monster is a half-Blair creature with a giant mouth coming out the side of his head. Also I hadn't previously noticed that Dr. Copper has a nose-ring, which makes no sense whatsoever to me. This blu-ray makes it clear that the film has held up very well over time and isn't nearly as dated as other stuff from the early '80s-- it was groundbreaking when it came out and is still a very suspenseful and extremely gory film, really the best of both worlds for those who enjoy really scary monsters with a good story behind them.Read full review
This movie still stands on its own merit, seen it at the theater at its initial release! It gave me the creeps the first time and it still does the trick decades later. When you couple this with the newer release of The Thing, which showed the story from the Norwegian's side, it makes a great double feature which is linked together. John Carpenter rocked it! Z

John Carpenter's The Thing remains one of the best horror films to ever be released. A reimaging of The Thing from Another World, this picture forces a group of stranded individuals to question who, or what, their companions may be. Much like Invasion of the Body Snatchers, The Thing capitalizes on paranoia, given that the person sitting next to you, may, in fact, be an alien parasite that could tear you limb from limb. Even beyond the mere paranoia, the practical effects hold up better than almost everything since and are far better on screen than the computer-generated effects seen in the remake. If you are looking for a tense, scary, gory, horror film, I can't recommend this movie enough for fans of the genre.
