MSD 8228 Blaster Coil fits 1998 RAM 5.9L v8...with one catch
A very good coil for the older push-rod Dodge Magnum v8 motors like the LA 318 & LA 360 that are descendants of the LA 273 v8 from the 1960s. Very easy to install as there are just 2 Phillips screws holding coil in place. Be sure to use spark plug boot puller so the coil wire from distributor will not be damaged. Also, dielectric grease is a must. MSD 8228 coil is a very hot coil and brings life to older worn spark plugs as their gaps have widened in time = perfect, as new plugs will need a wider gap than the factory .040" by at least another .005" as this is a hot coil. MSD *should* make a converter wire for the newer 2nd generation Dodge RAM (1998-2002 / block two RAMs) as the connector plug changed: the 1994-1997 (block one RAMs) connector is used with MSD 8228 and MSD should make a adapter plug. This coil will work on the 2002 RAM 1500 as well as that model had the old Magnum engine as the Hemi had yet to arrive. Instead, those that wanting MSD power & quality must get the ACCEL 140021AH Super Coil Adapter Harness. Too bad MSD doesn't make this item known or available to its customer base, hence 4 out of 5 stars for me.Verified purchase: YesCondition: New

Unlike a similar coil advertised for the 1990 to 1997 which has the polarity flipped for the 1997 model year and so they have a short life when installed in the earlier cars. ( I got this from an MSD rep at Holley). Do not buy the Accel brand coil unless you have a 1997 model year, it will fail in less than a year. I have two in the scrap metal bin, so I know from personal experience. So far so good, its working and functioning a month later.Verified purchase: YesCondition: New
