While not in the original boxes, the cartridges have the seals intact-so new and unused. The 4 cartridges were each sealed in a black plastic bag, which is good, however, there were no labels or tags on each of these bags to indicate what color cartridge it contained. I needed just the Yellow cartridge at first, but had to open each bag to see what color it contained (of course, the Yellow was in the last bag I opened).

Genuine HP Q5942A 42A is only way to go, I have tried two other non HP generic and on one the electronic sensor went bad and kept getting error message and could not resolve. Other cartridge had bad quality printing.
