DirecTV H24 receiver is the most recent, free-standing (i.e. does not need a Genie) receiver that works with ALL types of their systems. In other words, it will work with a SWiM system as well as a mom-SWiM one, including all of the Legacy configurations. The only difference in the equipment requirement is a BBC unit, an up-converter, that goes directly on the unit, prior to connecting the RF cable from the dish. It is made in the same image as the HR24 DVRs - it is a soft-touch, front screen, unit, as opposed to all the previous ones, which were "hard" button-push. Overall, a very reliable, "good-looking" unit. It is also quite small and thus easily attachable to the back of any TV set in such a way that it will respond to the remote control in the IR mode, and yet remaining "invisible" from the front! I recently upgraded my DirecTV receiver from the HR-21 to the HR-24. From first glance the newer and slimmer box was much more aesthetically pleasing. When I replaced the old bulky unit my shelf almost looked naked. The menu was slightly faster which is a huge plus and worked considerably better with my Harmony 1100 remote. I have always been impressed with the DirecTV HD picture, and this unit delivers as expected. I was a little concerned about cooling considering the size of the box. After a few hours of HD programming the box got pretty hot. I keep it on an open shelf with plenty of ventilation and after a few days the picture started freezing. I would unplug the unit and after a few minutes it worked fine again. I considered returning it and decided to do a little googling first. I found that this was a pretty common problem with the HR-24s. I went to Best Buy and found a netbook cooler mat on clearance for $12, I was happy that it was for a netbook as it fit the receiver perfectly. I used the USB on the back of the receiver to power the mat and since then I have never had a freezing issue (I have been running it 24/7 for three months now). I would like to comment even with the mat the receiver is still silent (no fan noise) I would recommend this unit to a friend as long as they purchased the cooler mat along with it. I cant give this product 5 stars because of the cooling issue, these receivers should undergo better testing before release to the public. All in all a good unit with improved menu speed and a nicer GUI, a solid 4 starsRead full review
We needed a receiver for our new travel trailer and the H24 fit the bill. It is inexpensive and works with the satellite dish we purchased. After changing the dish type in the receiver settings it worked fine. You'll find the dish type in the installation manual of the of the dish.

Pretty good receiver, works well and displays full HD on a capable TV, the favorites section could be a bit better as it really does not make it easy for the user to remove a lot of crappy channels I do have to find more info about the capabilities of the network port other than to display programs recorded by your in house DVR, pretty nice touch sensitive buttons, another downside is that it gets hot even while its turned off, so that means its consuming electricity even when off
DirecTV WILL NOT activate any box that was not originally on your account. If a box was on your account originally and was deactivated and removed from the account but you kept the box and you later decide you would like it turned back on, nope wont do that either. So ALL of these boxes on ebay and other various places for sale are useless. Spent 2.5 hrs on the phone with foreigners who hardly speak & understand english trying to get the box I had brought activated to come to this conclusion after one had originally told me that purchasing a box from ebay was fine and no problem to activate the week prior.
