*Yawn* That's what you'll be doing the whole time you read this. That or fighting against yawning. And that will be about the only fighting you'll experience. I bought this book after having played "The Witcher," which is an excellent PC game. I had also read Sapkowski's previous work related to this series - "The Last Wish," and while that book was OK it was pretty short and didn't have much of a story line. I was hoping this book would succeed in the areas that the previous book had not. Oh how wrong I was. Remember the movie Independence Day? When those aliens came and blew crap up and there were epic dogfighting scenes and nuclear explosions? That was fun. But before you could have those explosions, you had to have some character building, and some slow scenes at the beginning to set you up for the climax. People going to school, people on their cell phones - the boring lull before the storm. It's a literary necessity. Maybe Sapkowski skipped literary school after just the first few classes, because the book never gets beyond the boring lull before the storm. Character building, pointless dialogue upon pointless dialogue, posturing, scene descriptions - all these things, but no climax, no big story. There are some interesting parts I guess. At some point Geralt fights a fish. Oh, and a girl destroys a chicken coup near the end. So the alien space ship hovers above the Empire State Building, poised to strike, with Jeff Goldblum standing slack jawed in disbelief. And then the movie ends. I wonder what will happen? We'll never know because Sapkowski himself got so bored with this series that he never continued. But you can do better. Don't even start.Read full review
"Blood Of Elves" is the third book in The Witcher series. First two books by Andrzej Sapkowski, "The Last Wish" and "Sword Of Destiny", were collections of short stories about the Witcher, Geralt of Rivia. Only few were directly connected. In them readers get to meet some characters for the first time, and see how Geralt got to know them in his adventures (including the girl Ciri, whom you might know from the popular video game "The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt"). "Blood Of Elves" is different, it is a beginning of one large story, revolving around Ciri, that continues in following books (there is total of 8 "Witcher" books, followed by video games). "Blood Of Elves" is not a self contained story, it is an introduction to a greater line of events that will involve adventures, politics, schemes and so on. Do not expect all of it to come right away though. There is some of it here, but not as much as in following books. This one starts things up, and establishes various things and characters in this world of Witcher. So if you want more lore and feel of this world, and of course witness the start of the main story line of The Witcher franchise, then I do recommend you the "Blood Of Elves".Read full review

The third book opens up the politics of the world, and puts Geralt into the center of it along with Ciri, some of the passages can drag on a bit but over all it is a solid read.

If you like the Witcher and you've read The Last Wish and Sword of Destiny, you'll like this. That said, the female characters are pretty one-dimensional, but it's an old series.
