Fantastic live cover set of Styx songs!
It is a shame that some of the high quality music releases out there right now are hard to obtain (especially from such well known artists from the classic rock era of the 70's and 80's) like Dennis DeYoung. Nevertheless, here is a great Dennis DeYoung live album and DVD on eBay and I'm happy that I found it. The title says it all for this quality live set from Dennis DeYoung where he and his band play Styx covers for a kind of "best of" set that is one of the best "Styx" live albums out there, even if it isn't the band Styx themselves. The DVD is very well done. I discovered it on YouTube and watched it several times before buying this set. Great sound, picture quality, and camera angles. Imagine if Dennis DeYoung grabbed the best Styx cover band on the planet and took over the lead vocal spot, they are that good! The two lead guitar players are fantastic and are better (dare I say) than Tommy Shaw and James Young on the guitar. They even kind of look and sound like them. Guitar player August Zadra sounds like Tommy Shaw when he sings. The drummer and bass player are also fantastic. The live recording is top-notch and the stage setup is brilliantly done. While Styx's music is decidedly hard rock in some places and soft rock in others it is also very progressive rock as well and prog rockers should absolutely love this set along with rock musicians in general. Dennis DeYoung has aged well and can sing almost as well as he did back in his heyday. This is a testament to not only his professionalism as a musician but also his superior vocal technique as well. He didn't blow out his voice like so many others did from the same musical era. When the playing and performances are this tight, exciting, and well recorded it is hard to find something to complain about. However, if I had one quibble it is this, why didn't they play more Dennis DeYoung solo stuff other than Desert Moon? Yes, yes, it is a night of Styx, but it would have been nice to hear a few more of DeYoung's solo songs with this fantastic lineup of musicians. However with that being said I should not complain, this is a great double live album and DVD set. Just close your eyes and sail away and you'll swear that you are listening to Styx.
