About this product

Product Information

The Olympus Zuiko 12-60mm f/2.8-4 SWD ED lens offers extreme wide photo angles with a 5.0x zoom. With Olympus's Supersonic Wave Drive (SWD) Autofocus System, it provides quiet, precise, high-speed response. The two compact, high-powered SWD devices inside operate the lenses by creating elliptical oscillations unique to Olympus's autofocus system. At the same time, a 5.3 mm by 4.3 mm ultra-compact optical encoder detects the lens drive's position. Eliminating the reduction gear, the encoder adjusts the lens drive position using direct rotation detection. This completely digital system both speeds up the focusing process and reduces operating noise. These SWD lenses are compatible with all camera bodies using the Four Thirds system. They are designed for use with the Olympus E-3 cameras and work well with the E-M1. Paired with these cameras, they deliver focusing speeds of 17 seconds and accuracy to within 5 microns. With an MMF adapter, you also can attach Zuiko lenses to Olympus PEN and OM-D cameras. The Four Thirds system, developed by Olympus and Eastman Kodak, creates an industry standard allowing complete interchangeability regardless of manufacturer. Four Thirds viewfinders are mirrorless, and Micro Four Thirds bodies do not contain either mirrors or pentaprisms. Some dispense with an optical viewfinder, relying solely on the LCD screen. The bodies also have smaller image sensors. Overall, Four Thirds bodies and digital lenses are lighter, more compact, and more portable. As an extreme wide angle lens, the Olympus Zuiko 12-60mm gives you an 84- to 20-degree real angle view. It also allows macro photography from distances of 9.84 inches throughout the full zoom range. The 12 mm to 60 mm DSLR zoom lens range is equivalent to a zoom range of 24 mm to 120 mm on a 35 mm SLR camera.Aspherical, or nonspherical, elements and Extra-Low Dispersion ED Glass eliminate chromatic aberration and other optical aberrations for crisp, bright, clear digital images. Seven circular aperture blades allow natural blurring for the image's background. This Olympus Zuiko 12-60 mm is splash proof and dust proof. It also resists weather, mold, and mildew. Take this lens into the field for nature, wildlife, and extreme sports photography without worrying about damage. The maximum aperture for wide angle shots is 1:2.8, and for telephoto photography, the maximum is 1:4.0. The minimum setting is 1:22. These settings are controlled by the camera. Maximum image magnification is 0.58x, and the maximum focal length is 60 mm, while the minimum is 12 mm. The Olympus lens measures 3.9 inches by 3.1 inches by 3.1 inches and weighs 1.3 pounds. The Zuiko 12-60mm f/2.8-4 comes with operating instructions and the LC-72B lens cap, the LH-75B lens hood, and the LR-1 lens rear cap. Compatible accessories for digital SLRs include the EC-20 and EC-14 teleconverters, 72 mm diameter filters, and the EX-25 extension tube. With its precise accuracy and nearly silent, high-speed focusing technology, the Olympus 12-60mm f/2.8-4 provides photographers at all levels with sharp, clear images from macro close-ups to telephoto distance shots for a digital SLR.

  • Don't overlook this lens if you have EM1 1or 2

I bought this lens because it has the focal length range that I like. I was not sure how well it was going to work with my EM1 1 but I have been pleasantly pleased. While it does not focus as fast as the newer pro lenses it is quite adequate plus manual focus works well. I have used it for several photo shoots & really like it. The photos are sharp with good color & it focused quickly in most situations. This lens is a great deal for the price they are selling for. I actually prefer this lens to my 12-40 f2.8. The 12-40 is a great lens, fast focusing, sharp but the focal range is limiting while th12-60 is perfect for me.

  • Amazingly good lens

I have been an Olympus aficionado since the OM 1 and I have had the pleasure to use most of their top lenses, including the 250/2.0 (which I am now selling), and several of the pro and semi-pro digital lenses. With that frame of reference, this lens impressed me beyond my high expectations that were based on many reviews. It is the best walk around lens. It's images are tack sharp even wide open. Focusing is lightning fast and accurate and it will focus down to about 4" at 60/120 mm. My highest recommendation.

  • Used Lens

It was in excellent used condition as advertised. I bought it for an older used camera system since Olympus no longer supports their DSLR owners. These lens will not work properly on a micro 4/3 body with the adapter for sports photography or anything where a quick focus speed is required. You can no longer buy an Olympus DSLR camera. If you are buying a new camera system buy from someone who does not abandon a huge portion of their custom base as Olympus did. So buy from someone like Nikon, Pentax, Sony etc. The image quality from my new Nikon system is so much better than my Olympus E-5 DSLR or my sons Olympus OM-D E-M1.

  • Very good IQ, quick focusing, good focal range

As with many things in life, whether something is "worth it" depends. I am an enthusiast photographer, I suppose it would be called. Not a professional, and never will be a professional. I have an E-3, having upgraded in the last year from an E-300. (I love the E-3 compared to the old E-300. A huge upgrade in all respects.) I love this lens. It takes great pictures and feels good on the camera body. I also have used the kit 14 – 42 mm and the 14 – 54 mm. The 12-60 mm is a substantial improvement over the 14 – 42 in all respects and a marginal improvement, at least, over the 12 – 54, especially in terms of auto focus and the slightly greater focal range. The 12 – 60 mm also seems to have better IQ than the 12-54 mm. At least, I think it does but on the other hand perhaps I am just trying to convince myself I made the right decision to purchase it. The decision whether to buy the 12-60 mm depends entirely on how much money you want to pay for photography equipment and what you're upgrading from. For $200, I was able to buy this lens used with two slight scratches on the front that as far as I can tell do not affect IQ. At that price, and especially if you do not have another lens in this focal range, I would definitely recommend getting this lens. It is bigger than the other two but a step up and significant step up in some sense from either. If you already have the 12-54 mm, are not too picky, and have limited funds to spend, frankly you might just stick with it as it's a darn good lens. (The 12-42 mm is a pretty good lens also and dirt cheap.) If that's the case, I would put the money into for example the 50 – 200 mm or the 70 – 300 mm instead. Or maybe a good fixed prime lens.

  • olympus Zuiko 12-60mm f2.8-4

solid build, fast focus with olympus E-3 (FT), focus good with E-M1 (MFT). Typical olympus pictures.

  • Fantastic lens at a fantastic price

The lens came in 2 days earlier than promised and in "as new" condition. The 12-60mm Olympus lens suddenly became my go-to lens (my Olympus 18-180mm had been my favorite). The focus speed is phenomenal and the sharpness is unsurpassed. I use it on my E-3, E-620 and E510 and it performs superbly on all. I am one happy camper (my wife does not share my joy as I am out shooting pictures most of the day}. If you own an Oly DSLR (especially E-3 and E-5) you owe it to yourself to buy this lens. John

  • 43 lens on M43

I was looking for a walk around lens for my Olympus OMD EM1. I found it in e older SWD 12-60mm Olympus lens. Excellent sharpness, as good as my better M43 primes. A bit on the heavy side, but the IQ makes up for it. Lens hood is troublesome and difficult to remove but otherwise this is an excellent lens.

  • sharp, crips and perfect!

Really lovely lens. Very sharp, crisp and a joy to use. This is an exceptional piece of glass! While I have not done as much with it yet as I hoped the images are superb. Looking forward to many years of use.
