Air Conditioners

Air conditioners can one room or a whole building cool or warm. Air conditioning systems differ in how much heating or cooling they provide, ranging from 5,000 to more than 30,000 BTU per hour. These systems are made by many different brands, including Carrier, Frigidaire, Haier, and LG.

What types of air conditioners are there?

Air cooling systems come in many varieties, each of which functions in a slightly different way. Some of these include:

  • Split System: This type consists of two parts and is designed to cool either one room or the entirety of your home. It has an outdoor unit and an indoor unit, the former of which is placed outside against the wall of one of the indoor rooms. The outdoor unit consists of an expansion coil, condenser coil, and a compressor, while the indoor unit contains the cooling coil and air filter.
  • Window System: These types of air conditioners are meant to be used for the cooling of a single room since they can be installed directly into an open window. These air conditioners have one side that faces inside the other faces is outside. This allows them to filter dirty air out of the room.
  • Portable Air Conditioners: A portable air conditioner is small and lightweight, allowing you to transport the device to other rooms easily. These portable systems can be placed on the floor are generally a couple of feet tall. Some also have wheels to roll the unit around with.
What is a SEER rating?

Most air conditioning models, including portable ones, will have a SEER rating listed on them. This stands for "seasonal energy efficiency rating" and determines how much cooling a system puts out for each unit of energy it consumes. Energy efficient devices allow you cut on power usage and help to keep the environment healthy. This is typically just one of many features available with air conditioners.

What are some features of air conditioners?

Air conditioning systems can be outfitted with a variety of features. Some systems are entirely ductless, which means they won't drip water while in use. Others come with a timer that allows you to control when it turns on and off. Many cooling models come with a remote control, while some can be controlled by a mobile device. The air conditioner's mobile app allows you to change the settings of the equipment, change between heat and cooling, and more when you're away from home. Other features that might be available include an inverter that controls the speed of the motor. Some air conditioning models can also be mounted on your wall.
