Noir fans may be surprised that this film is in color. It showcases Ginger Rogers's costumes, but Rogers and Tierney, usually big stars, have small roles. Peggy Ann Garner, as the murdered girl, gets more screen time than Rogers or Tierney, because much of the story is told in flashback. Van Heflin, as the main suspect, is onscreen most of the time. He, and the police detectives, solve the murder the old-fashioned civilized way, by questioning everyone. There are no car chases or shootouts, and no one is in danger. The complex characters, and the skilled actors portraying them, keep things interesting, but this is very much a cozy mystery rather than a thriller. It moves a bit slow for viewers who prefer less talk and more action. The Special Features include very good short documentaries on Rogers and Tierney.Read full review
