ECW is world famous for being one of the most extreme wrestling promotions in the history of the sport. To this day the legend of ECW remains, and the infamous chants of its name can still be heard in other wrestling promotions, by some of the promotions most ardent fans. Many feel that had ECW not been around, there never would have been a "Attitude Era" the famous span of time where wrestling greats like Stone Cold Steve Austin, The Rock, and Mick Foley came into their own. Hot off the heels of "The Rise and Fall of ECW", WWE has decided to capatalize on the success of the DVD with a collection of some of the bloodiest, most violent matches in ECW history, from the original Bingo Hall in Philedelhia, to the currently cancelled WWE promotion. . What we have here is a great example of the diversity, edge, and off-the-beaten-track entertainment that the promotion became known for. The 2 disc DVD includes some of the most famous matches in the promotions run, including the infamous Barbed Wire Match between ECW legends Sabu and Terry Funk. This match is famous for the blood involved, as well as the infamous injury Sabu sustained. During the match, Sabu attempted a splash in the corner, however, Funk dodged and Sabu went straight into the wire. As he came off, his arm hooked onto the barbed wire, and his right bicep was completely ripped open by the sharp thorns. Rather than end the match there, Sabu instead yells for his then yells for someone to get some duct tape, at which point he tapes the gaping hole in his arm shut, and continues the match. Another famous moment of the match was it's ending, when Sabu and Terry Funk became so entangled in the barbed wire, the match was stopped and Funk and Sabu had to be cut out of the giant mess of steel and flesh. The match was considered to be the most famous match in ECW's long history. Another famous match was the singles match between managers Beulah McGillicutty, and Bill Alfonso. While both managers almost never wrestled any matches in their careers, the two of them had, in ECW owner Paul Heyman's words, "a spectacular fight". By the end, both wrestlers were bloodied, bruised, beaten, and had the crowd amazed at the fact that two managers had such fight in them. For me, this was one of the better matches on the DVD. While I can't write much do the small space Ebay affords, "Blood Sport ECW: The Most Violent Matches" is a great example of the amazing promotion that was ECW. If you have grown tired of the current WWE product, or if you were a fan of the promotion back in its heyday, then this DVD will be an amazing purchase. I paid for mine, and was not dissapointed, and if you are a true wrestling afficinado, then this DVD will be like Christmas in July.Read full review
Okay now I know you guys who read my reviews are expecting comments on every match. I appreciate all of you who read my reviews, but I have to disappoint you. There are too many matches on this DVD to comment on every one. I only have so many characters to do a review. But I will comment on my top favorites on the DVD, and if one sucks, I'll just say it sucks and all matches will have a ?/5 star rating. By the way, some of these are among the most violent in ECW's history, but most are not even close. And take notice the lack of New Jack, who had some of the most violent matches in ECW history. But these were chosen by Paul Heyman and there's a lot of bad blood between those two. Anyway... Public Enemy vs. Cactus Jack & Mikey Whipwreck - 2/5 Stars Sandman & Terry Funk vs. Cactus Jack & Shane Douglas - 3/5 Stars Ian Rotten vs. Axl Rotten - 5/5 Stars This was the culmination of the horrifying series of matches between brother Ian and Axl. These guys had some of the sickest, most violent matches ever seen which was dubbed "the Summer of Violence." This match is sick!! For those of you who don't know what a Taipei Deathmatch is, let me break it down for you. You tape up your fists, dip them into glue, then put them into broken glass, and then beat the $#!+ out of eachother!! Rey Mysterio vs. Psicosis - 5/5 Stars This "Mexican Deathmatch" is one of literally 500+ matches these two have had with eachother and is fantastic. Lucha Libre at it's best. This match is super fast, lots of flying moves... you just have to see it. Don't blink either!!! Chris Jericho vs. Pitbull #2 vs. Shane Douglas vs. 2 Cold Scorpio - 4/5 Stars Tommy Dreamer vs. Brian Lee - 3/5 Stars Rob Van Dam vs. Sabu - 3/5 Stars Stevie Richards vs. Sandman vs. Terry Funk - 4/5 Stars This match is good, but what I don't get is why Stevie Richards is in this match while Tommy Dreamer is doing commentary with Joey Styles. No offense to Stevie, he's really cool and was pretty over, but Tommy in my opinion should have been in this match. But still a really good, hardcore match. Sabu vs. Terry Funk - 5/5 Stars This is one of the best No Rope Barbed Wire Deathmatches I've ever seen. Yes, it's the match where Sabu rips open his bicep and Terry Funk almost dies when the Barbed Wire wraps around his neck. Beulah McGillicutty vs. Bill Alfonso - 5/5 Stars This match is one of the bloodiest matches I've ever seen. Fonzie get his @$$ kicked BAD!! Taz vs. Bam Bam Bigelow - 4/5 Stars This is one of the best matches from the Bigelow / Taz feud from 1998. Taz vs. Shane Douglas - 4/5 Stars Dudley Boyz vs. Spike Dudley & Balls Mahoney - 4/5 Stars Mike Awesome vs. Spike Dudley - 5/5 Stars Awesome pummles Spike, but Spike won't stay down!! Rhino vs. Sandman - 3/5 Stars Little Guido vs. Super Crazy vs. Yoshihiro TAJIRI - 5/5 Stars Tommy Dreamer vs. CW Anderson - 4/5 Stars Mike Awesome vs. Masato Tanaka - 5/5 Stars This is my personal favorite match on the DVD. I'm a die-hard fan of FMW and these two started there. This is another fantastic match in one of the longest and hottest feuds in Wrestling History. Fantastic match!!! This was Awesome's last televised match. Shut up Joey, ECW stole him from FMW, WCW stole from ECW. This match has one of the most brutal powerbombs I have ever seen!!! Extras include a music video, bonus interviews and a bonus match - The Gangstas vs. Public Enemy Please vote for this review!!!!Read full review
LISTEN IF YOUR A COLLECTOR AND AUCTIONER LIKE ME. THE ONLY REASON THIS DVD SETS IT SELF APART IS THAT WWE DIGITALLY REMASTERED ALL MATCHES WHICH IS A PLUS. YES IT HAS THE BARBED-WIRE MATCH WHICH IS STILL HANDS DOWN 1 OF THE BEST IN HISTORY.BUT OUT OF THE WHOLE DVD. THERE WERE ONLY 2 MATCHES I ALREADY DIDN'T HAVE ON OTHERS. SO IF YOU WANT SOME OF THE BEST MATCHES.GREAT CHOICE IF YOU DON'T OWN ANY OF THE OTHER ECW DVDS AS FAR AS ORIGINAL PPV, OR OTHERS THAT GET AUCTIONED.EVEN THOUGH MOST ARE BETTER. IF YOU REALLY WANT TO GET THE RAW GRITTY FEEL THAT WAS ECW.
For it being a used DVD and it's very clean never skipped.
