George V (George Frederick Ernest Albert) was third in line of succession behind his father (Prince Albert Edward) and his elder brother (Prince Albert Victor) when he was born during the reign of his Grandmother Queen Victoria. The unexpected death of his brother in 1892 put him directly in line for the throne. When Queen Victoria died in 1901, his father ascended to the throne as King Edward VII, and George was created Prince of Wales. He became King-Emperor upon his father's death in 1910. The cent was being struck at the time as a large cent, and this continued until 1920, when the small cent was introduced as cost of producing the large cent was above the value of the coin. In 1920, both large and small cent with George V's likeness were struck. The small cent continued until 1936, which includes the almost mythical 1936 Dot cent. There are three know examples, with one being sold this decade in the US for $253,000. The 1923, and 1925 small cents are the rarest of all small cents.Read full review
