Essentially these are big hour glass shaped lab beakers. The top part of the 'hour glass' is open and round. You wedge your triangular paper coffee filter in the top part, put in the grounds and slowly pour near boiling water through. People like these for several reasons. You can control the temperature of the water better than an automatic There is no plastic being heated in your hot water (why I got it) You don't have to clean your coffee pot for mineral build-up Takes up less counter space. Makes good coffee. Chemex makes coffee filters that are extra thick so you don't get any sediment etc. I didn't feel like dealing with more delivery charges so I got the #4 Mellita filters at the grocery store and use 2 at a time. Works fine but my Chemex is 6 cup. You might need a bigger filter for a bigger one. Cons - it doesn't keep your coffee warm. I guess you can get a little metal grate so you can put your stove on low and put the beaker on the stove. I think that would work fine. I just use the microwave and am not bothered by this con. Heating water - I have been heating water in a cooking pot which is ok. I guess an electric tea kettle would be the way to go, but they are near impossible to find without plastic inside them. (I wish the people who run these companies would get with the program). Heating water in a pot or regular stove top tea kettle is not a big deal. You have to make sure you don't run out of filters. I don't think enough people are aware of these simple hands-on coffee makers. Does it take a little longer to brew ? Yes. Does it clean up easily and make significantly better coffee. YES ! The simple nature of the thing and easy clean-up more than make up for a slightly longer brew time. And I never would have believed it.... but it makes your coffee sweeter and smoother and amplifies the flavor. A better cup of coffee that NO automatic drip machine can come close to. I enjoy the flexibility of it. I can adjust anything in the brewing process. Time, temperature, soak, strength,etc.. If you consider yourself a coffee lover, there are just a few things you can do to have better coffee at home. Changing to a more expensive automatic drip machine is not one of them. Buying and roasting your own beans is one of them. Grinding your own beans just before they go into the coffeemaker is one of them, but you have to use a good quality burr grinder. You also need a good home roaster which I think is the Gene Cafe CBR-101. We're talking $1000 in coffee equipment and we haven't even mentioned espresso machines. However for $50 you can buy one of these and make coffee that is honestly better than what you've been drinking.Read full review

We have always wanted to try out the Chemex brand. I am glad I did our coffee's in the morning are rich smooth and flavorful. If you were hesitant to buy one don't hesitate anymore you won't regret your decision. The Keurig we used before is being shelved for a while :-)

Chemex coffee makers are not made for brewing quick coffee it's made for brewing exceptional clean coffee. this is my fourth Chemix I only wish they would make it in stainless steel

This is THEE! way to make coffee. (Miss that coffee from the service? this is the way!) It's really easy to use. Boil water, pour over coffee. Pour in glass followed by pour into face. Cleaning is easy. I WOULD BUY THIS AGAIN! HIGHLY RECOMMEND.
