I carefully inserted this CPU and after gently cleaning the top with alcohol, placed a large bead of thermal grease on top. After reinstalling the "standard" HP heat-sink and rebooting the system (Z400), the typical warning came up with the message about the need for an HP Performance heat-sink requirement due to the fact that this CPU is above 120W. No problem here, that is the next step. (The performance heat-sink is larger with one more copper cooling tube and a fourth wire at the connector) I booted anyway, and noted a difference in response. I am very satisfied with the upgrade!

This CPU replaced an i7 920 C0 I had tried to overclock. This processor added instant stability to my system I had not had with the i7. It has an unlocked multiplier however I have not bothered to overclock since it turbos to 3.33GHz easily and already improved my 3Dmark vantage score greatly. It idles in a watercooled system at about 5 degrees C higher than the i7 920. I have read before that Xeons can only run 1066/1333 DDR3 memory but I am happy to report this is not really correct. If your memory supports XMP which my Mushkin Redline 6-7-6-18 1600MHz does you can get full speed without having to mess with an overclock. However now that my system is truly stable and I have begun using Max/MSP with Ableton live on it I am considering adding ECC DDR 1333 instead for stability which you can watercool without violating a warranty (it's easier to find server ram without jackets).Read full review
Purchased this to upgrade my Dell Precision T3500 and while an Intel 6 core would have been nice I wasn't ready to drop $1000+ to get in to the game. This CPU is rock solid, WEI is 7.6 under Windows 7 Ultimate x64 and it is a nice improvement at a price that I could accept. Upgrading was easy - after opening the case and removing the CPU heat sink it was as simple as removing the existing CPU and installing the new. I added some Arctic Silver thermal compound to the top of the CPU, reinstalled the heat sink and closed the case up. Booted up and I'm off to the races.
Overclocking BEAST with an unlocked multi. Mine is apparently not the best batch# for overclocking but I still get a stable 4.3 (31x139) with Turbo Boost turned off (or 1100 MHZ above standard 3.2 clock speed) out of mine. Found it on eBay NOS and unused for $130 :) The i7 965 EE is only CO stepping but the Xeon equivalent W3570 is DO. Was going to upgrade to a new socket but after finding and testing my new Xeon W3570 I upgraded to 2133mhz RAM too. I'll hang onto my 1366 Gigabyte EX58 Extreme for at least another 2 or 3 years I reckon and buy a new graphics card and SSD with the money I've saved.
6 cores at 3.2 ghz is hard to beat! in this price range and for boards of this era you aren't going to find much better and its a massive improvement over my previous quad core! I put it in an HP Z400 and it works great! If you have an HP Z400 make sure the Bios is up to date before you install it.
