I loved the book "Little Women" by Louisa May Alcott. Set in Concord, Massachusetts during the Civil War, this is the story of the March family. Jo(Ryder), Meg(Alvarado), Beth(Danes), and Amy(Dunst and Mathis) also known as "Little Women" are being raised alone by their mother, Marmee(Sarandon) because her husband, their father is fighting the war. I love the scene in the beginning when Father is wounded and Marmee must leave to nurse him. The girls decide to give up their sumptuous Christmas breakfast to the German family who has nothing, knowing they had not much at all themselves, brings tears to my eyes. This is also where we meet Laurie(Bale) who becomes a honorary member of the Marches. It takes us from New York to France and back home again~so many pretty scenes. The girls fight and make up and love each other and they go out into the world and still love to come back home. So many award winning actors, Susan Sarandon, Winona Ryder, Claire Danes, Christian Bale, Gabriel Byrne, Kirsten Dunst, Trini Alvarado, Samantha Mathis, and Mary Wickes as Aunt March for goodness sakes, with a cast like this it was bound to be a class act!!Read full review
I have several versions of Little Women...one with Katherine Hepburn, one with Elizabeth Taylor, and this one with Wyona Ryder. This is my favorite by far. The characters are very believable and loveable. No over acting, just a wonderful story. My family watches it every year. A sweet, wonderfully refreshing story.

Not only is this a good movie for sisters, but for anyone who enjoys an intriguing story about life and love. I have seen this movie so many times, I can quote parts. Even my dad has seen it multiple times and was seen wiping a tear or two. Rider plays a great role, as well as all the actors and actresses in this unforgettable story of growing up, and the happiness and heartache that goes along with it. A must-have for any romantic's collection!
I bought this movie after recently re-reading the novel. I owned both the original movie and the remake on VHS, but misplaced them years ago. The 2000 version paints an accurate, beautiful picture of the Novel by Louisa May Alcott. I believe it highlights the most important aspects of the book-a difficult feat, especially for a novel over 640 pages. The only problem I have with this remake is the depiction of the relationship between Laurie and the Amy. The movie makes it seem as though Laurie goes from being rebuffed by Jo, to falling (literally) madly in love with Amy. There is a time lapse of four years during the movie, and they had to cast an older actress to play the 4-year older Amy. This is understandable and was necessary to translate this tale properly to film. But because her "aging" and her relationship with Laurie happen so suddenly during the movie, it comes off as creepy and incestuous. I remember always being sad when the movie ends, and watching it years later was no different. This movie will surely move you and your whole family to both tears and laughter, and leave you all with a warm feeling.Read full review
