Having already heard the original Band of Gypsies albums, I wasn't sure I really wanted to hear more. Now I think this was his best band -- not in sheer talent maybe, but for telepathic interaction. *All* the BoG releases are valuable listening, and while this has four songs duplicated on the Machine Gun release, it's worth having simply for the two performances of "Machine Gun" which aren't on the the other two BoG releases. Definitely recommended.

STUNNING! If you like Jimi Hendrix, this is a definite must. It gives you a glimpse into where he was trying to travel musically with his next studio album that went uncompleted, in the wake of his untimely death. He really exudes coolness on everything recorded here. When I say that I mean its like he's totally laying it on the line, playing wise, taking chances everywhere, but even if he hits a wrong note, he bends it or feeds it back into a beautiful creation that is there, only inside that moment in time. He waits for things to develope. Listening to Machine Gun version on the second disc places you inside the mind of a Vietnam soldier at the time of his dying. It is almost eerie to listen to, it will make your neck hair stand up strait. Hendrix has a different type of groove playing with Buddy Miles and Billy Cox than he did with the former Experience members. It is solid R&B at times and other times like uncharted sonic water. Buddy MIles is a very strong singer on this and you kind of get the feeling that a big part of the reason for the immediate breakup of this lineup afterwards was Hendrix's managers and handlers not wanting Miles "disrupting" or "changing" what they thought was their "Hendrix machine", the way they liked it. In fact, Miles seemed to only bring out the best in Hendrix in these recordings, with one heck of a backbeat and a serious drive. Something that Mitch Mitchel only flirted with because his style was so much more jazz oriented. Another thing that is noteworthy on this is that Billy Cox sometimes plays harmony with Hendrix's rhythm, which fattens the sound of Jimi's Strat at times to really make the groove sound full on the R&B songs. It is very ironic that the main reason for this "Band of Gypsies" being recorded was to fulfill an obligation to satisfy a lawsuit that was against Hendrix at the time- how so many times has one person's suffering benefitted others that they never knew about. Product-wise, there is a nice booklet included that has a few cool pictures and the linier notes for the shows and the band members. The jewel case is a little flimsy, but if this was lost, I'd buy it again even if it came between two slices of bread :)Read full review

This is probably one of the last live recordings that Hendrix did. The whole cd is very good with guitar that cannot be matched to this day from start to finish. The only thing that I thought was a little bit of a drawback was when the drummer sang on it. Even when the drummer was singing, Hendrix was still playing very excellent guitar though. Also, A song or two on this performance, where never released on a studio album. You will not be disappointed in hearing this cd, overall, it is very good.
This is one of the best albums from the era.....Hendrix fans all have it, if you're new to Jimi's music, you gotta get it. The modern re-mastering is near flawless, but if it were perfect, then it wouldn't sound as good as it does.....Buy it now.
