Authors are seldom as interesting as their works; perhaps there's a cause and effect there. Irish writer James Joyce is the subject here, but in the hands of a bland actor like Ewan McGregor, he's even more boring on screen than he probably was in real life. Nora, his mistress and the inspiration for much of his work, is so superbly presented by Susan Lynch that this slow film often catches fire from her sparkling performance. She puts a "star" like McGregor to shame. The supporting cast members too are all better than McGregor, and it's not surprising that he often looks sheepish is such truly talented company. The color of the DVD edition is paler and less vibrant (especially in the outdoor scenes) than I remember from its big screen version, but the music is sublime, especially its oft-repeated romantic theme.Read full review
The dvd arrived promptly and in good shape. The movie is an accurate portrayal of Joyce as Nora.
