How We Got Here: Looking to upgrade your Macbook or Macbook Pro? Once, I was just like you. I suffered with the small, slow stock hard disk drive (HDD) in my Macbook. Over the past few years, it had grown fragmented, was getting rather full and things were slowing down. Where Are We Going? Look kids, there are reletively few things you need to know about HDD. First is size. Most people know about this. My stock drive was 80gb and I knew I needed more. So do you. In fact, buy more space than you'll use. A lot more. Why? Because your computer uses, even though you're not using explicitly. A larger drive will be faster than a small cluttered one. The other thing you may know about is speed. My stock Apple HDD was 5400rpm (revolutions per minute). This bad boy's speed rating is 7200rpm. That means data is read faster and writes faster. There's more to speed equation, but this is 99% of what we need to know. Lastly and most importantly, size matters. The physical dimensions of the drive mean the difference between one that fits and one that doesn't. This is a 2.5" drive, which is the standard size for laptops and some compact desktops (i.e. Mac Mini). Why Not Solid State? The new wave of HDD are solid state. They're like massive flash drives. They're fast. Well, faster for most things. Something like writing m-a-s-s-i-v-e files is slower, but 90% of the time, they're faster. Remember what I said about RPMs above? The solid state drive circumvent this problem because there's nothing to spin. Not having to spin means faster read/write times. So why not get one? They're also way more expensive, and although prices are dropping fast, I got a lot more for my money with this drive. The Installation Apple has excellent PDF directions on their site for installation instructions. Here's the link for Macbooks: http://manuals.info.apple.com/en/macbook_13inch_harddrive_diy.pdf I completed mine in 5 minutes and it was my first time. Be sure you have a torqs screwdriver handy (size T6, as I recall). In Summary There are a lot of options out there, kids, but the Seagate ST9500420AS is the best drive out there in the physical memory category. And get the ST9500420AS, not the "G" model since the the Macbook and Macbook Pro already have impact protection. Read full review
At first my laptop was mostly used for school projects and rarely ever for high quality web designing projects. Now that I have developed an interest and have my own freelance designing stuff, I need much more space than 100GB @ 7200 RPM. This was well worth the upgrade, I was able to use EASEUS ToDoBackup for cloning the drive and EASEUS Partition Manager for increasing the partitions. All in all, I'm thoroughly satisfied, my computer used to move so slow with all the stuff on the hard drive, now with extra allocation, it's so much simpler. I wish the they had the 750GB one, that was what I was really hoping for but this is doing just fine. I was able to extend volume dimensions on my recovery partition as well.
I purchased this hard drive specifically to upgrade my 120gb PS3 slim. The extra space was what I was going for, but with the Seagate running at 7200rpm instead of the original 5400rpm drive, I see a definite improvement in game loading times, install, and download speed. It's also quieter and seems to run a little cooler then the original HDD. I would suspect even better performance if it was installed into a laptop due to higher pc processor speeds. Buy one, you won't we disappointed.
RPM is a big difference maker, depending on your use for the drive. This drive has a good amount of storage space but its the spindle speed that made me look for this type of drive than just search by price. Also, through past experience, the Momentus drives have lasted longer than other drives with similar specifications.
totally cool... i am female 56 years old and my laptop was doa.. i took it to the computer store and they wanted 185.00 for a hard drive... i googled you tube and said wow i can do this... paid 35.00 for used hard drive and my windows 7 laptop is running faster than before ( it had just gone out of warranity) i have another laptop that i a sure needs a hard drive and will be purchasing again...
