I'm rating this unit at 4 out of 5. I think it's a great starter unit, and it does exactly what it is supposed to do. The recorder is compact, and intuitive enough that even the most non-tech-savvy user will be pleased. It does lack some features of higher priced units, such as USB connectivity, and a backlit screen, and illuminated buttons for night use or low light situations, and also lacks a carrying case. At this unit's current price point, this is to be expected. Battery life is very good, although the indicator seemed to lose the first segment rather quickly. I have ordered a lapel microphone for the unit, and a stereo unidirectional mic for recording lectures and meetings. I originally bought the unit with the intention of using it to record "honey-do" lists and reminders on a daily basis. This unit is a manufacturer refurbished unit, and is a discontinued Sony product, according to their website. The rating of 4 reflects a lack of USB connectivity, and a backlit screen. A carrying case or protective sleeve of some sort would have boosted my rating to 5. I say...buy it!Read full review
(Sony ICD-BX800 digital 2GB Voice Recorder): it looks (in weight, shape and function) as the Sony ICD-BX700 and Sony ICD-PX820 but with one step up to the (Sony ICD-BX700 1GB Voice Recorder):the only difference is the Internal storage capacity which is larger in the BX800; It is also one step under the (Sony ICD-PX820 2GB Voice Recorder):The only difference is: it doesn't have USB Port as the PX820 has (refer to enclosed pictures for this comparison. This Recorder provides up to 534 hours of recording capacity via 2GB internal flash memory with 5 Folders, selectable microphone sensitivity, A-B repeat function, adjustable Speed Control, Stereo Microphone Jack, and alarm function. Uses 2 AAA Batteries and is battery saver (when not in use, slide the switch to Hold Position which saves Battery and turns Power off). (Refer to enclosed pictures to see its Operation keys). But as BX-800 is basic Recorder: No back-light;No Micro SD Slot for extra storage,so when 2GB Internal Memory is full, use the delete key to free space; No USB port to directly connect to PC (BUT) there is way to do it by using(mini plug cable)to save your recordings to PC:Plug one end of the cable to Headphone jack on IC recorder,Plug the other end into Microphone jack on Computer (make sure Sound in PC set to high) then Open the Sound Recorder window and click Record,Press PLAY on IC recorder to start the playback of Messages to be recorded on PC Based on my long use of (Sony ICD-BX800 Recorder):The voice is greatly clear (to get clean sound from your recording, place piece of fabric between table and Recorder which prevents vibration noise reflected from the Sound Waves to solid surface);Record away from other Data Sources such as other Recorders,PC,etc,.and to reduce surrounding noise, use the Menu to set the (N-Cut to on). My long use with 4 of this Recorder, that I bought from 3 Sellers at eBay, it is great Recorder in all its functions; reasonable price, Very easy to use; Compact ultra-lightweight to fit in my small pocket listening to songs while walking, with great mic sensitivity and clarity, playback loudly with no need to use Earphone! Operates fully for what is designed for (for that reason I gave it 5 Stars). I use it daily for several hours to listen to French books and songs I record to keep my french sharp! and it functions perfectly without ANY failure! It doesn't come with bag; I recommend you make one as the one I pictured here which I hand made it with accessible keys to use it without taking it out of its bag, protect it from accidental drop, keep it away from dust and enjoy its use for years to come (as I previously did for 5 years, and always do, with my previous Sony ICD-AX412 Recorder).Read full review

I bought this recorder for a couple main reason's. one was for taking notes. Not having to write down all my thoughts on projects, music, even reminders, makes it quick and easy. This product is just that...quick and easy. The other reason is I am writing a book. Again it is much easier to speak my thoughts into the recorder and play back later and listen to what I said. This way I can easily feed this info into a book format and have my under writter can hear how my voice sounded. She can then hear how I said things which her gives her clues on how I meant something, with infelction in my voice for meaning, and intensity. Thus she can fill in sentences with words using and verbs and adjectives to bring excitement and meaning to what I am saying... I do not type well.I leave out words that bring meaning to a sentence. My spelling is lacking at times. While speaking into this hand held, very convenient recorder, that is all eliminated. The size makes it easy to take any where. The type of batteries are easy to get any where and last a long time. I like the fact that it has a speaker built in. That way I can listen back very quickly....The amount of recodring time is excellent. The big display makes it easy to read....Large buttons for recorder function make it very easy as well. The quality of the sound is very good as well. I rate this product for my purpose as a 5 of 5. I will be using it for music recording for lesson's meetings and so on. I am sure it will do very well for that as well. Sony is known for great products. The quailty of this recorder is made very well. I already have dropped it and it did not scatter into pieces. I would have gotten another one if had. WayneRead full review
I bought this recorder because I needed one for class lectures. The price was excellent and I've always trusted Sony for quality products. The sound quality is very clear and the very best of all is the battery life (2 AAA batteries) is unbelieveable. It still has 5 bars and I have used it for hours !! The only downside is that it comes on easily while in my purse... say while shopping it will just randomly come on or record whatever is going on at the time. That's my fault though... I need to purchase a case I suppose.
I really like my recorder , from the first day I opened it , I started to use it right away and it was so easily to turn on and start to record . This one takes regular batteries so that's nice to get to buy batteries . I am not sure if maybe there is a plug that would allow the user to plug in while at home and use batteries while out , but I will keep searching for accessories for all my electronics , I Love Sony !
