This movie about two Australian firefighters pretending to be gay to get a tax break was the inspiration for the American film I NOW PRONOUNCE YOU CHUCK AND LARRY. The main difference between the two films is that while CHUCK AND LARRY may have had more laughs, the actors (especially Adam Sandler) were obviously PLAYING IT for laughs. Aside from a few poignant moments where Chuck and Larry did in fact appear to be devoted friends, the dialogue and acting were so campy that Chuck and Larry may as well have rented a billboard and announced, WE'RE ONLY PLAYING AT BEING GAY! On the other hand, Paul Hogan and his best friend do more research and try their best to seem like gay lovers, not gay stereotypes. It's a more serious film, though there are some funny scenes when the guys go to a gay dance bar. Paul Hogan in leather shorts? Definitely hot! STRANGE BEDFELLOWS is not offensive to homosexuals, and it makes heterosexuals think about the nature of love, friendship, and whether the government has the right to legislate sex or define what constitutes a domestic partner. If you like CHUCK AND LARRY, watch STRANGE BEDFELLOWS to see where it all began. If you thought CHUCK AND LARRY was silly, watch STRANGE BEDFELLOWS for a more realistic but still amusing treatment of the same subject.Read full review
Overall, very good and bordering on excellent, Strange Bedfellows is a story of true friendship, of relationships, of how we are manipulated into behaving. While "an Aussie story" set in Australia, the story is not tied to Australia, and the relationship, behavior, and the way everyone behaves travels well, be it to Canada, the US, or European markets. Baffling it might be, the best feature of a movie about two straight men pretending to be gay men for tax purposes-- actually tax fraud-- is in making us look at ourselves, the way we behave, at our own motivations. It's worth it. .

What makes this movie so great is the dynamic between the two main characters. It feels like that they have truly been best friends all their lives, it's the only way get into that much trouble and not kill each other. In the trying to save each other they find help in completely exepected place and some great new friends.
I've seen this movie for the first time in Australie. Wonderful, hilarious. Paul Hogan certainly played much better then in his "Crocs" movies. Recommended (for all ages) !
