Ever since compiling a list of my top 10 scary pictures I've wanted to include this film in my home collections. I original saw this movie in the 70's at an end-of-year showing at my junior high school. I still recall the entire audiance jumping and screaming at various points in the movie. When I got it I showed it at my daughters 12th birthday party. At first the girls thought it was campy. I just sat back and observed. They eventually settled quietly into watching. Only to be leaping and screaming at the "haunting" suprises. They ended up loving it so much they wanted it shown on the bus trip for their 6th grade outing. With this movie being so well done, I don't understand why they tried a remake (staring Liam Nieson and Catherine Zetta Jones) that was a horrible flop.Read full review
Good movie. The main character is a bit annoying, but written that way. One of the rare cases where the supporting characters are more interesting. Other than that, it has a good plot and has really good cinematography for the time.

i bought this to watch on halloween. i have seen it lots of times, read the book, and of course heard about it. stephen king says something like it is the best story of all time...he also says that scary stories can't stay scary as time goes by, but this one really holds up. i had to keep reminding myself that i knew there was nothing to be afraid of. i would recommend her other stories too; The Lottery is posted on the internet. that is a metaphor for anti-semitism--she said so in an interview in the NY Times--but of course it is very scary whether or not you know that. I also like -so-bad-they're-good- movies, but this one is intelligent and very sturdy.
This is the closest portrayal of Shirley Jackson's book "The Haunting of Hill House". The commentary is very interesting. After listening to the commentary, I had a new appreciation for the skill involved to shoot in B&W and I agree with the Director that it would lose its atmosphere if shot in color. The acting was really well done, the camera work was fantastic in bringing the house alive and the story as I mentioned followed as close to the book as possible although, I'm disappointed they didn't do the scene where a ghost had strewn Theo's wardrobe and covered it with paint/blood - could have been freaky and better explain why she bunked with Eleanor that night. All in all...a classic movie!!!

This is the finest horror film ever, based on the finest horror novel ever. If you are a fan of blood and gore, superfluous sex and idiotic behavior, you will hate this story. But if you love great horror without gore and sex, this is you story. Suspenseful, wonderfully paced and it literally pulls you into the action. There is not even a monster, creature or ghost appearing onstage. This is the old fashioned "OH MY GOD!!" horror, when plot and characters were still important.
