I saw the original thing movie many years ago and it was very scary to watch it then, but this remake of the thing is even scarier than the first. The creature was something nightmares are made from, and I'm glad it isn't a real monster. I recommend this remake of the THING to monster lovers, especially if you liked the original THING movie. The price wasn't too bad either.

Being a big fan of the 1982 version of "The Thing", I just had to check out this flick made 29 years later. I will tell you what 2011's "The Thing" is not-it's no masterpiece of horror/sci fi, but then, very few movies from the last 20 years are. What it IS...it's a very scary, entertaining compliment to John Carpenter's 1982 cult classic of the same name, with Kurt Russell, Wilford Brimley, Richard Dysart, et. al. I won't make subjective comparisons between the two movies; I will only say that this Matthijs van Heijningen flick fills in a lot of blanks and answers many unanswered questions left in the '82 film. The makers of this movie were very meticulous in following the storyline of that disastrous Antarctic winter of 1982. This movie tells what happened to the unfortunate Norwegians who found the Thing and brought it to their base...the Norwegian base was built as close to the original (or what Russell and Dysart FOUND of it) as they could, considering no original blueprints exist. The scenes of the Thing attacking members of the Norse team are very gory and frightening; the alien Thing behaves very much as it does in the '82 film, and its wicked intent makes for an intensely paranoid thrill ride. Fans of the original (not counting 1951's "The Thing From Another World", based on the same John W. Campbell story) will undoubtedly be divided on this movie's qualities...to me it was a great go-along flick to follow the original. In fact, if you own both movies, I suggest watching van Heijningen's entry first and following with Carpenter's scare-fest; the stories flow together quite smoothly. The special effects in both are incredible. Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Joel Edgerton head up a great cast, with many actual Norwegian actors in key roles. 5 stars!Read full review

I loved the original movie when John Carpenter did it in the last millennium. Had to see what happened before the sled dog ran to the USA camp!
