Over the years I had collected numerous tapes of movies...... then they were rendered obsolete by DVDs. What to do about all those VCR movies from years ago? Watch them. When the Toshiba SD-V296 that I had owned for many years finally went kaput I started looking for a replacement. Since I already had the programming procedure down pat, I hoped to buy another just like the one I had. Each one I found was well used and seemed somewhat iffy to me. New ones were discontinued. I kept looking and found one listed as "like new" display model and ordered it. Being of newer manufacture (last year) I found that everything worked more smoothly and the picture was much crisper than it was on my old set. If it proves to hold up as well as my old one, I will be happy. So far it has lived up to expectations. The only downside is that you cannot watch a different TV channel while recording a TV program.Read full review

So far it's working well. DVD and VHS tapes doing fine while viewing. The add may have mentioned the remote was not factory but it operates the unit fine. The remote range and point of aim is more limited than our original unit was but does the trick. The unit is black compared to our old one that was silver and the manual controls are a little less visible when operating. Dark color makes it harder to see the buttons. Bottom line is everything appears to work and we are glad to be watching our movies again. Hope it lasts a long time.

I have owned several over these last 5+ years since my last VCR with tuner died. They don't last as long as the old ones did but I've had some 4 yrs. etc. They are easy to set up, use, and are light weight. Easy to program - can set up to 8 programmed shows to be taped. Can only tape 1 channel at a time and must use converter box with Analog or Digital TV as source of input. Set TV to 3, and choose AV source if using Digital TV. Converter box chooses channel which you can, also, buy ones that allow you to program up to 8 shows. You can watch show if you want while taping by choosing TV source. Definitely saves money instead of paying for streaming or cable. DVD's play great, too! MP3's can also be used in this unit.

I wanted a DVD VCR Combo that was easy to use. I got it! And as much as I anticipated that it would be difficult to connect to my Tv, that didn't happen - very easy! I'm happy! I believe it will give me all the years of enjoyment I need! Thanks!

This Toshiba SD-V296 DVD VHS Combo Player is a replacement for an older model Toshiba that, sadly, died after many years of service and very frequent use. This newer model is great. Does everything it needs to do in playing DVDs and VHS tapes. And the set-up was so simple, even someone as techno-installation impaired as I am was able to set it up, plug everything in and have it working on the first try -- without even peeking at the user's manual. No cussing, fuming or hair-pulling.
