The features of the Underworld: Evolution DVD are pretty similar to the first Underworld DVD. Director Len Wiseman and his technical team combine for a commentary track that discusses how they "cheated" on Kate Beckinsale's action sequences, how they reused backgrounds from the first film to save money, and the difficulty of filming a love scene involving the director's wife. Over an hour of featurettes cover the story and the casting, visual effects (CGI, props, and miniatures), stunts, production design, music, and sound effects. Wiseman also mentions in his commentary that there are more bits and pieces of the story to reveal "if an extended edition [comes] out." Considering Underworld was released four times on DVD, another release of Underworld: Evolution would seem to be almost a foregone conclusion.Read full review
"Underworld: evolution" is the sequel to "Underworld", the supernatural thriller regarding an old feud between vampires and lycans, and as such is more of the same. By that, I mean uncomplicated fun for those who from time to time enjoy watching a fast paced film that has elements of fantasy in it, and that lacks food for thought but makes up for that with lots of entertainment value. Are you, like me, one of those people I mentioned above? If the answer is no, do not lose your time, this film is probably not the right one for you. If the answer is yes, I recommend you watch this movie, but only after having enjoyed the first one. Now I am going to talk a little about the plot of "Underworld: evolution", so if you still have to watch the first movie in the series stop reading now, in order to avoid spoilers. The plot of this sequels picks up where the last one left off, and does an excellent job of allowing us to catch up with Selene (Kate Beckinsale), the beautiful vampire death-dealer, and Michael (Scott Speedman), the young lycan she has feelings for. Michael was turned by Selene into a hybrid of lycan and vampire in order to be saved from certain death, but that act of defiance and the fact that Selene killed an ancient vampire ruler to protect Michael, means that they are both on the run. But what exactly has Michael turned into, and will they be able to survive? And what will happen when Marcus (Tony Curran), another of the vampire elders, turns into a hybrid of a different kind, and finally achieves the power to free his dangerous brother, William (Brian Steele)? Things become even more complicated when we find out that Marcus was the father of all vampires, as William was the father of all lycans. On top of everything, Marcus and William s father, Alexander Corvinus (Sir Derek Jacobi), decides to meddle and help Selene and Michael to stop his sons. The alternative is chaos, and a world full of crazed lycans running free and wreaking havoc. In my opinion, Len Wiseman (director) and Danny McBride (scriptwriter) did a great job filling some of the blanks left in the first movie, and continuing to tell us about an alternate universe where vampire and lycans fight for supremacy among mankind. The result is that their story is more believable, and thus more engaging. All in all, I can say that I really enjoyed watching this film, and that I believe that is even better than the first one. Of course, "Underworld: evolution" is not perfect, but it is so entertaining that does t matter too much. Highly recommended!Read full review
I was excited when I learned there was a sequel to Underworld. I rushed out and saw it in theaters as soon as it was released. It was not a disapointment. You must see the first Underworld to understand any of this sequel. A few things to point out. More blood and gore but not too much that it ruins the movie. One thing that needed to be cut was the some of the nudity. I like love scenes, and between Micheal and Selena it was okay, but the other vampire female scenes were not appropriate. The special effects were great and the movie added more twists to keep you hooked throughout the movie. My husband always falls asleep during movies, but he stayed awake through out all this exciting, action filled movie. One thing I didn't understand was the location. It didn't quite match with the first Underworld. Subways and advanced civilization in the first movie but woods, castles, and old mines in the sequel.Read full review
Well, i think this is one of those sequels where you almost HAVE TO watch the first movie BEFORE watching this... i had NOT seen part one, so i was COMPLETELY LOST! my son and daughter, (7 & 10) liked it because they are into vampires and scary movies...but to follow the storyline....I was completely LOST! I kept asking my husband questions, since he had seen the first one....(not a pleasant thing to do when someone is trying to watch a movie.) .. BUT..i do have to say..the graphics, stunts, and special effects were awesome...no...i'm going to get part one, watch it, them watch part 2 again...maybe it will be better after that...we'll see.
I discovered Moonlight in 2007 on CBS, then the Twilight series, then Underworld. I enjoyed the first movie, but like the second movie in the too be trilogy even more. It is faster and the special effects are superior. It was also more lurid in the violence, the fight scenes between the lycans (werewolves) and the vampires, and there is one sex scene though not X, but you know what's happening! If the first was a pg13, this movie is upped to pg17-if I were rating. The violence was almost alittle too violent but then I knew what to expect after seeing the first movie. I jumped in the first the first time I watched it. It won't make sense if you haven't seen the first movie so much so I recommend buying it - what I liked most? Probably the fact that after so many centuries, finally Selene (Kate) falls in love and the human factor still is there. Plus, her love interest, Michael (Scott) is fun to watch!Read full review
