The great thing about this book is that IT IS NOT an autopsy of the Pacific campaign, or a detailed analysis of each battle. This is one guys personal experience, from his perspective. It is what he lived, not why research has discovered 20 years later. This the experience of a young southern gentleman going into a “meat grinder” and coming out the other side. I would also recommend Sledge’s follow up book “China Marine.”

The book is very quick reading and very interesting having come directly from someone who was there to experience combat there with the Japanese. The author is a good story teller and very succinct. He doesn't hold anything back.

I just finished watching the Tom Hanks/Steven Spielberg production of The Pacific, a TV series based on this book and some other sources and I'm part way into reading this book now too. It's compelling and goes into far more detail about the men and women who served during WWII, and particularly the experiences of Eugene Sledge as he details in With The Old Breed. I knew I would enjoy it and I truly am. I've also purchased and read Unbroken, the life story of Louis Zamperini, another great book from the same era that everyone should read. Sometimes these stories are hard to absorb, but it's vital to know the truth and hardships of war and how important faith is to survival and hopefully to future choices of how to avoid this massive conflicts. I highly recommend reading these books. Thanks.Read full review

An exceptionally honest and well written account, covering the author’s mindset and experiences from basic training, on through the hardship and horrors of combat on the islands of the South Pacific during World War Two.

This was a great book based on his recollection and time he fought in the Pacific during WW2. Show how different it was for those men fighting the Japanese compared to those fighting the Germans. Some of this was on the mini-series of Band of Brothers Pacific.
