Store Category Guidelines Buyers use store categories to browse your store and quickly find items they’d like to purchase. Similar to a physical store, your eBay Store categories are the "aisles" or "shelves" that enable you to organize and display your listings to buyers.
Guidelines that will help you create and display your categories
-
-
Organize your categories according to how buyers shop. This could be by type of item, theme, size, color, genre, format, and so forth. Remember to use terms that buyers will understand
-
Don't overwhelm your buyers. Just because you have 300 categories at your disposal does not mean that you need to use 100 categories–or even 30. Do research on other sites that sell similar items to determine how they set up their category structure
-
As a guideline only, here are eBay's recommendations on how average eBay Store owners might want to set up their categories:
-
Level 1 category: include 7–10 categories
-
Level 2 category: include 5–10 categories under each Level 1 category
-
Level 3 category: include 5–10 categories under each Level 2 category
-
Avoid duplicating category names or creating similar category names — such as Jeans, Men's Jeans, Gap Jeans — because this is confusing and creates multiple locations for buyers to look
-
Name your category using 30 characters or fewer to make them easy to scan
-
Minimize how often you edit category names, to avoid frequent changes for your buyers
You should know this
-
Your store categories don't need to match eBay's categories
-
You can create as many as 300 store categories and subcategories with up to three levels of categories; for example, a category named Sporting Goods, can have two additional subcategories: Sporting Goods > Golf > Balls
-
If no category is assigned to a listing, it will appear under "Other items." Whenever you create a new listing, you'll be able to assign it to two of your store categories, in addition to eBay's categories
-
You can add, rename, move, reorder, and delete store categories at any time
-
You can reorder categories by number of listings, alphabetical order, and manually
-
A category will not appear in your store if there are no listings in it
-
You can move listings from one category to another
Note: Listings that you created before you opened your store automatically appear in the "Other items" store category, but you can edit those listings to change your category selection.
