What are some common string instruments in an orchestra?
There are many string instruments in an orchestra including:
- Violins: Most violins are about 24 inches long, and they are normally held between the left shoulder and the chin where they are played with a bow.
- Violas: These string instruments are slightly larger than a violin, but they are held in the same way. While violins are busy playing the melody, violas almost always play harmony.
- Cellos: A cello is about 4 feet long, and it is played with a bow while being held between a seated player’s knees. These bass instruments often play the bottom melody.
- Double basses: Players almost always stand up to play the double bass because it is almost 6 feet tall. While this instrument is often played with a bow like other string instruments, the strings on it are often plucked.
- Harps: Some orchestras include a harp. This instrument usually has 47 keys that are tuned to match the white keys on a piano. Some harps have foot pedals to assist in making sharp or flat notes from this instrument.
