Pond Liners

Pond Liners

Water features, like ponds and waterfalls, transform ordinary landscapes into customized oases. Pond liners ensure that your favourite water feature is maintained for optimal enjoyment. Retain water effectively and easily by choosing from a variety of liners to suit your specific needs.

Why are pond liners black?

Most pond liners are manufactured using carbon black. Though pond liners are becoming available in different colours, the basic standard colour is black due to how the liner is manufactured rather than for a specific purpose.

Where is PVC pond liner used?

PVC is used in many landscaping projects, from gardens to ponds. PVC pond liners are flexible, easy to install, and include UV protection to prevent sun damage.

How do you determine how much pond liner is needed?

You will need to measure the depth, width, and length of your pond. Once you have taken those measurements, use these equations:

  • Total Length - Total length = depth X 2 X length
  • Total Width - Total width = depth X 2 X width
Now you can determine sheet size. Round up instead of down so that you have enough liner. If you need to connect sheets by seaming, then you will want to have excess. Seaming requires melting one sheet into another to create a single sheet that is strong enough to retain water. A seaming kit is a good tool to have on hand during the installation process. These kits will assist you if your size calculations are off. When are pond liners replaced?

Depending on the type of pond and the type of liner, as well as your climate conditions, replacement times vary. Here are some general guidelines:

  • Plastic Liners - Plastic liners last roughly 10 years. Harsh winter or summer conditions can shorten this lifespan.
  • Rubber Liners or EPDM - Rubber liners last 10 years or longer. Rubber is less likely to become damaged during the installation process because it is flexible. Butyl liners are seamable, but EPDM is usually purchased in one sheet, which can be folded to fit your pond. EPDM and other rubber liners are healthy for fish ponds and able to withstand annual cleanings and pumps.
  • Clay Liners - Clay is long-lasting, with some aqua biologists claiming it can last centuries. Clay expands and contracts with weather conditions and can withstand other forms of natural damage, to include sun damage.
  • Soil-Enhanced Liners - These pond liners combine organic and inorganic materials. This combination of synthetics with organics results in lifespans greater than that of synthetic-only materials.
What is pond-liner underlayment?

Underlayment is used to cushion pond liners, whether clay, EPDM, or plastic. Growing roots and other disturbances can damage garden ponds. Landscape features and equipment like waterfalls or pumps are also hazards. If you want to prevent a pond from flooding your garden with water, then choose underlayment. It is made from synthetic or organic materials and provides additional protection for your pond.
