- Neck: Pressing fingers on the neck on most musical instruments changes the tune of the strings creating music.
- Waist: Most musical instruments get smaller in the middle, making it easier to draw the bow across them.
- Bridge: Holds the strings away from the instrument’s body.
- Tailpiece: This piece anchors the strings to the body at the bottom of the instrument. Many tailpieces have fine-tuning knobs.
- F-holes: These F-shaped holes in the top of the instrument allow the music to sound louder.
What are some common string instruments in an orchestra?
There are many string instruments in an orchestra including:
- Violins: Most violins are about 24 inches long, and they are normally held between the left shoulder and the chin where they are played with a bow.
- Violas: These string instruments are slightly larger than a violin, but they are held in the same way. While violins are busy playing the melody, violas almost always play harmony.
