- F-holes: These F-shaped holes in the top of the instrument allow the music to sound louder.
What are some common string instruments in an orchestra?
There are many string instruments in an orchestra including:
- Violins: Most violins are about 24 inches long, and they are normally held between the left shoulder and the chin where they are played with a bow.
- Violas: These string instruments are slightly larger than a violin, but they are held in the same way. While violins are busy playing the melody, violas almost always play harmony.
- Cellos: A cello is about 4 feet long, and it is played with a bow while being held between a seated player’s knees. These bass instruments often play the bottom melody.
