Early Canon Digital ELPH, might not be a good deal?

Lotsa years back this was an Excellent camera, so I won't rate it lower just because it's out of date, and this one is an excellent value for me. The S230 was my first Digital ELPH, have had a succession of others, all better and better.

I wouldn't suggest you get one of these unless you've got a reason! The newer models, with numbers in the 700 and 900 range, are superior in every way: they've smaller, lighter, smarter, and have bigger & brighter LCD panels on their backs, and get more MegaPixels to the storage media a lot quicker.

New models are also quicker to snap the picture after you press the button, too, where this old S230 might take a couple of seconds and not get the shot until after everybody said Cheese and looked away.

This used S230 replaces one that died after six or seven years' good use, so that I could keep using old batteries and CF cards, and because it was cheap, less than $35 in the Summer of 2010, and was offered by somebody with good feedback.

Canons have superior lenses with good optical zoom range, and render scenes, faces, and macros nicely. The S230 has a real 'viewfinder', which is helpful for old eyes, but so do some of the newer models. The S230's LCD panel is postage-stamp sized and can't really be used to judge the quality of an image just snapped, where the newer, larger LCDs really show what you just got and if you've got to try it again.

If you're buying one of these in 2010 or beyond, beware that you might be disappointed in its low-resolution images, bulk, sloth, placement of controls, and teensy-tiny, little-bitty icons on a very small LCD panel to provide feedback about the state of the camera's many controls.Read full review...

This was a good camera - not anymore.

This *WAS* a great camera. and I have a terrific under-water housing for this camera that I used to take some gorgeous pictures while snorkeling in Hawaii.

Unfortunately, it turns out that most of the S230's have a bad CCD that will eventually go bad. I discovered this recently when my eBay purchased camera that was supposedly working arrived DOA, and I did some research.

So avoid this camera unless you are confident that the camera has a repaired CCD!Read full review...

Super S230

Excellent camera. If you are looking to email pictures or print 4X6 this is nthe camera for you. I HAD THIS BE NY WORK HORSE CAMERA FOR OVER A DECADE.Still keeps pumpig put great pictures.
