A Pro midrange zoom

Pro quality glasses, great color rendition, super fast autofocus, built like a tank and yet compact in size.
Also, love the close up portraiture bokeh at 70 mm focal point thanked to its 9 rounded blades. Decent sharpness at F2.8 but super sharp by F5.6 thru F11.
Overall, a pro quality tool that comes with a price but monies well spent.

Nikons cream of the crop

There isn’t a lens a lens that is just perfect at every single scenario.... but this one comes pretty close!

It is a tank. Super well built, so it can’t take a lot of damage. It is also super precise if you have to use the zoom ring and it simply always works! The focus is very fast and precise.

Picture quality is pretty close to perfect. It almost performs as good as a prime, and it is sharp corner to corner. A bit of distortion if that concerns you, but the best part about this lens is its constant output. The pictures look sharp regardless of focal length or aperture setting. That makes it very reliable, especially for a professional photographer.

Yes it is a bit bulky.... only if you compare it to other lenses of its same focal length, but a small price you have to pay for the reliability of this lens. Speaking of low price, although this lens was overpriced at the beginning, since the release of the VR version, this one has dropped in price dramatically and for what I heard it is not as good as this one ;-)

You won’t be disappointed if you don’t mind spending the money on it. It’s also a phenomenal travel lens

A good general purpose zoom lens

If only lens buying is based solely on rational decision then this is the lens to buy if you can only buy one lens. It provides a fast maximum f/2.8 stop for most shooting situations indoor and outdoor with an infinitely useful focal range from the 24 mm wide angle to the mid range 70mm. It's a great general purpose lens for everyday use if there's ever such a general photography category.Read full review...

Excellent zoom lense

Cons:
1. Durable metal structure with sophisticated craft
2. Excellent focus speed and accuracy
3. Versatile for multiple purposes with good sharpness

Proc:
1. Comparing with 24-70 from other manufacturers such as Canon and Tamron, the sharpness of this lens decays more significantly from center to edges.
2. Not good at Distortion and Vignette control
3. No VR

Although Nikon has already published second generation 24-70 with useful new feature "VR" and some tech specs of this lens are outdated, I still highly recommend the old one rather than the new one. Actually I didn't see any dramatic promotion but bigger size, more weight and plastic structure in the exchange of "VR". With all due respect, I don't think new 24-70 is a proper "Marketing Positioning" for zoom products.
All in all, it is a cost effective "multi-function" zoom lens to have in ur bag. And if u don't understand what is "multi-function" and keep asking questions like" Is it as good as a 50mm prime lens, I will definitely recommend u to go back to learn from the beginning...

Perfect product and great price

If you ever wondered if a high priced lens really makes a difference, the answer is yes! The sharpness of this lens and the focus range is about as perfect as can be. The photos look better than real life. I got a great deal on eBay for this mint condition lens at $750. Keep shopping and I am sure you can get close to the price I paid.Read full review...

Good for hand held low light shooting

I bought my Nikon D750 with the kit lens. That's a great every day walking around general purpose lens but it's not particularly fast. I shoot indoor performances and was in need of a reasonably priced sharp, fast lens to compliment my Tamron 2.8 70-200. I looked at this lens and the Sigma Art. The reviews were excellent for both, but seemed to me to be a little more solid for the Nikon.

I used this lens for the first time at a performance last week-end. It did not disappoint. It has a quality build and feels substantial in the hand. It is weighty and balances nicely in the hand with the solidly built D750. I shot hand held using center spot focus and exposure and shutter priority as it was a dance performance. Focus was fast and sharpness was within my acceptable parameters for a hand held low-light motion shoot with an on-line destination for the photos. I shot for about three hours during two performances and cranked out 2450 shots. The lens hunted and had difficulty finding focus two or three times. Exposure was good without exception. This lens gave me the performance I was looking for and i recommend it.

I'm posting a few pix from this week-end's shoot. They are reduced in size to a max of 1000 pixels a side for web posting.

Excellent lens - one of the very best available - fastest - sharpest!

Not the smallest or lightest 24-70mm lens on the market but if you are interested in the best then this is it. This lens is very easy to use and has exemplary optics. This is perhaps the easiest-to-use professional midrange zoom ever offered by Nikon. This lens has a lot of metal in the construction - that and the supurb optics are reason for price. The manual focus is amazing and only takes a light touch from one finger, this amazing focus however is really a Nikon hallmark on their top lenses since the 1950s. But having said that there are few AF lenses on the market made by anybody that work this good in manual focus. You will love! Oh if you are shooting DX this lens is overkill so save your money.Read full review...

Awesom lens, great value, will improve the quality of your photography .

I bought this lens new, because I am a collector and wanted to keep it in perfect condition. This lens has lived up to all my expectations. It focus fast accurate and silent. It is fairly large and heavy, but it fits perfectly on my Nikon D7000 and feels just right in my hands. Because of this It will be my constant companion. It replaces the 28-70MM f/2.8 nikkor, that was larger and heavier, so I often left it behind. The only short coming is the lack of VR on this lens. I can envesion Nikon updating this lens with VR, so I am saving my pennies for the day that this happens. Until that day I am enjoying this lens to the max. It is perfect for portraits, as well as landscape photography. Bypassing all the technical jargon, the test of a great lens is if it takes great pictures, and the 24-70mm F/2.8 does that with ease, wide open at f/2.8. After many trials with third party lens, I came to the conclusion, that the best lens for a Nikon camera is the Nikkor lens, combined with the SB-800 flash, or other Nikon flash. I have tested third party lens on my Nikon camera and they work fairly good until a flash is needed. Then the quality falls off dramitically. Nikon equipment is not cheap, but you get what you pay for.Read full review...

Amazed by the amazing Nikkor 24-70!

This is truly the pinnacle of all of Nikon's professional lenses, at least for me it is. The focal range goes from pretty wide to the long end of normal, which is where most of my photography is, so this lens is pretty much glued to my camera now. Some folks claim that the AF-S Nikkor 24-70mm is heavy, but I think it's actually rather light, considering all of its components. This lens is a must-have! I used to have a Tamron 28-75mm, which was a decent lens, and this Nikkor just completely blows it out of the water! I will never settle for less than the best after using this lens. It even gives perfect pictures from my old-fashioned D200. :)

PROS:
- AF-S is extremely speedy
- Works on all Nikon digital SLRs and some Nikon film SLRs
- Sharp at all apertures and most ISO settings
- Easy to handhold
- Contrasty, even wide open
- Color rendition is spot-on accurate
- Built tough but remains aesthetically and cosmetically pleasing

CONS:
- Price point is way higher than the comparable Canon 24-70
- No aperture ring so cannot be used on older Nikon film cameras

The Nikkor is better than the Canon but not $500 better. Unfortunately, that's what you get with economies of scale. It is still worth buying and owning for a long, long time and is the ideal portrait lens!

Fast and Quality Optics

I owned this lens since when it first came out in the market and have used it for about 8 months now. I'm not going to go any detailed specs here but I'm going to say a few things about the lens in real life.

Cons: It's expensive and heavy. But as you know, f/2.8 zoom lens in this class is pretty much the same with other brand. Nikon lens are fairly expensive compare to Sigma, Tamron brands fitted to Nikon camera and at the end, you get what you paid for.

This newly introduced 24-70mm f/2.8G ED AF-S has special coating on the glass, they call it "NANO" coating and I've noticed that this lens produces less purple fringe(chromatic aberration) than my other older Nikon lens without "NANO" coating.

Even at f/2.8 wide open, it still produces sharp images and makes nice bokeh background. Focuses fast and virtually silent when focusing. I just wish they had put VR(Vibration Reduction) on this unit and it would have been perfect!

It's pretty big too, so I had to get a new bag to fit this and the lens hood nicely.

If you want exceptional quality lens in 24-70mm range for your Nikon, look no further. This is the one.

Hope this was helpful.
