I have several pioneer receivers some vsx 1020 and 1021 one vsx-21tx and a sc-25. All of theses receivers have excellent sound quality and are 7.1 surround the biggest difference are the features.

Excellent Sound, Air Play, streaming media, web radio - but NO OSD

one of the best Recivers i ever used.
Apple AIR PLAY working prefectly! (you can play any song from your ipod, iphone, ipad and pc with no cables :)

also, the Pioneer AV2 App working prefectly.
the sound is great. the only thing is that this Reciver have 130W per channel and its not enough. 150-165W would be great.

also and the most important thing. THIS RECIVER DONT HAVE OSD!!! YOU CAN USE OSD ONLY TO CONFIGURE THE RECIVERS. BUT IF YOU CHANGE THE VOLUME OR INPUT... NO OSD!!! SO IF YOU NEED OSD KNOW THAT THIS RECIVER DONT HAVE IT.

also, if you are watching a dolby digital movie you wont know it because the reciver is showing "STEREO" and only on the top left corner you can see in tiny letters "Dolby Digital"

Upscale to 1080P dont really work. you do see a better picture but its far far far far far far away from 1080P.Read full review...

Good receiver - wish Pioneer did some re-engineering though!!

This is a critically acclaimed product from an equally well acclaimed manufacturer. In addition to the sound, I do not really care about the other features much but gave this product four stars for 2 reasons:
1. These receivers are awfully hard to configure and I realized that I was not doing things right only after I took one back to the store to find the replacement behaving the same way
2. I could get no features related to internet/networking to work on this model at all.

However this receiver can support up to a 9.1 configuration and you can even take two speakers out into a separate zone. Some receivers from other manufacturers costing over $2000 can not do this so it is a great feature to have. The sound is outright stunning. I did hear the sound of relays clicking which though not too bothersome seemed bit odd...ever heard of solid state switching pioneer??!!Read full review...

Great Sound, Poor Longevity

Bought my VSX-1021-K in Feb. 2012. It is now Jan. 2017 and my unit just died due to a bad DTS chip and soldering. The chip is directly above the amplifier and will receive heat constantly. This is a known defect across several different Pioneer models, all with the same design. If not used for long periods of time, this unit might last 5-10 years. I used Auto-Off function on my unit for its entire service life, but still failed eventually. My unit only got used on weekends and for a few hours in the evenings.

If you can score one of these for cheap, it's a great deal, MSRP not so much. The sound from this receiver is fantastic and the unit has many features with 5 HDMI ports, 3 component video connections, and AirPlay.

My recommendation is to find some newer models, as units manufactured within the past 2 years now feature built-in WiFi for streaming Pandora, Spotify, etc.Read full review...

Good but…..

I have one and just like in the other review, it’s hard to configure and to use the internet. It’s also prone to overheating. No matter where you place it, if you play it for a long time, it will overheat and go into protection mode then you have to wait, reset it, then if you lucky, it will work again. I have an Onkyo and it’s on all day every day because I have it hooked to my flat screen. No problems, no overheating, no cutting off, easy to configure use of the internet. Device is a super performer in terms of Build Quality, Sound Quality and Connectivity.

Of its plurality of features I found the network connection to be very useful.
The rest of its special features, such as iPOD connectivity proved useless in a regular day-to-day use.

Ah.. The Pioneer vsx-1021K. It's a marvelous piece of equipment. A stand alone media center. If your an Apple fan like me and have an iPhone or 2 or 3 or 4. This receiver plays extremly well with them. The connectivity to this Stereo is insane! Not only is it powerful, it can handle your entire entertainment center needs. Hd 3D ready. Hdmi 4.0 two way tech. Bluetooth, Internet radio with thousands of channels and ability to program your own favorite stations that stream online. Handles multiple hdmi inputs and outputs speakers galore. 7.1 + 2 hi. I've purchased 3 of these each time upgrading to the next level up. You don't need to spend thousands of dollars on your entertainment media hub. This beauty can run with the big dogs and keep in the blue collar budget. My purchase of this receiver was based on reviews of others. After taking time to set up the system it works great. The only negative is the figuring out the pass thru for the HDMI (still working on it).
