An okay video game, a subpar classic Mega Man experience

I rate this 4 stars because a "bad" classic Mega Man game is still a great game by most other standards. The music is fantastic and the animated intro and boss sequences are a nice touch in the Playstation version. Just like the SNES original, the level design leaves a bit to be desired compared to the first to X games, but it isn't nearly as bad as X6, 7, or 8. There are too many power-ups and things to collect which you never really get a chance to use. For example, why are there four armor types when you only ever need to use one in one specific situation?

The worst part about the game is the x-buster armor upgrade. It completely hobbles the momentum of a game where the gameplay loop is, basically, charge, shoot, charge shoot - etc. The full effect looks neat, but the fully charged shot is slow and you don't get to start charging again until all particles are off screen - making the end game much harder than if you don't get the upgrade. Unfortunately you have to have it if you want the gold armor chip which does have its perks. There is a way to get Zero's saber, which will make the end game much easier as it takes 2 or 3 hits to kill Sigma, and kills most everything else in one hit.

The boss designs are pretty week, and their AI is also just as weak as well. Bit, Byte, and Vile are a bit too easy for their own good, and all of them have to be fought again in the fortress if you don't defeat them with the Ray Splasher - yep, they all have the exact same weakness.

All in all, it's an OKAY game, but not the best of the X series. Pick this one up only if you have nostalgia for the game, or want to complete a collection (like me).
