Microsoft 1661 Dock Station Review

The Microsoft 1661 Dock Station manages all the Ethernet/USB/video-monitor connections of your accessories and/or peripheral devices, while simultaneously charging, and doing all this with only ONE connection to your Surface Pro 3/4 Tablet. In addition, the Microsoft 1661 Dock Station functions as a powered USB hub that can recharge your cell phone(s). The Microsoft 1661 Dock Station is made up of two parts: one box for all the tablet computer to accessory/peripheral/power connections and a second box that functions as the power brick for the first box. Total weight of the Microsoft 1661 Dock Station, and its two-box design, is more than the weight of the original power brick that ships with the Surface Pro tablet. The two-box Microsoft 1661 Dock Station design is also slightly more unwieldy to set up than the original one-box power brick, but likely an equitable trade given all the added connection functionality. Overall, this is an excellent Surface Pro tablet computer supporting device, though Microsoft should consider a one-box design for the their next Dock Station, and a longer AC power cord.Read full review...

Works as expected, weighted so it stays put, not a lot of value for the price.

Does what it is supposed to do. I like the fact that it is heavy. Often docks are light and move around. Wish it had a couple more USB ports. It is not a great value though. Just this dock is half the price of a chromebook. I would recommend if you can get it for around $60 US. Read full review...

Works flawlessly

I had the older SP3 dock before and i thought that this would be a downgrade because I like how easy it was to plop the surface into it as opposed to fiddling around trying to fit a connector into the side. My old dock was giving me trouble like causing shut downs when I pulled my SP3 out with certain apps running. I upgraded to an SP4 which was a huge improvement in the reliability side of things. But the new docking station really solidified the performance in the docking experience. It is much faster to load up on my monitor and flawlessly disconnects with no shut downs and glitches. It is surprisingly easy to snap in the connector and I actually find it easier and quicker because I can do it all with one hand. It's easier than the old dock because with that you needed two hands to snap it together. Plus, you can move it around, change the tilt angle, and lay it down for drawing while docked. It looks like just a USB hub from the pictures, but once you see it you realize it's not a hub. It's bigger than it looks, and heavier. It sits nicely on your desk with 2 USB ports in the front for quick access. It powers your device and provides an improved audio driver experience (I am an amatuer sound engineer and I use various ASIO drivers on my DAW, this docking station driver works flawlessly). If you are on the fence, get it. You wont regret it and you'll see why the old SP3 docking station was crap.Read full review...

Really easy to use, but unfortunately with some bugs.

I use Surface Pro 3 for software development and I bought the dock to connect 2 Full HD monitors, mouse, USB headphone amplifier and Ethernet.

I really love that I use single cable to connect all that plus charging.
The dock is detected fast when connected.
Also it seems to disconnect without glitches.

But there is a bug when Surface with Dock goes to sleep. On wake up it may fail to turn on displays or fail to use USB hub.

Bugs I think are more related to Surface and Windows rather then dock itself.

Also keep in mind that it has long cable from AC adapter to Dock, but shorter power and signal cables.
The dock and ac adapter are of the same size. So it looks nice stacked on the table.

Surface Pro 4 Dock

Does what it says and gives the Surface Pro enough docks to be a functional machine. Much better than the old design that was an actual dock. This is like a an extra power brick with extra functionality. I would say the value is right in the used market but full retail is way too high for what it is. Read full review...

What I needed, just a little heavy

This is pretty much what I was looking for. It works well with my Surface Go. The only thing I don't like about it is that it is so heavy. I guess, since it is both the dock and the charging block, I should have figured it would not be light. But considering I will be using it with my Surface Go, I would like it to not weigh like three times as much as the tablet.
But it does have all the ports I was looking for, or at least a way to make things easier to use than just having a usb c.

BUY THIS DOCK!!!

I have a Surface Pro 4 and this is BY FAR the easiest and most streamlined way add external monitors, USB peripherals and charge, all from one heavy, good quality brick! At about $115, I avoided this accessory, because I was kind of cheap, thinking that it couldn't really make life simpler. Boy, was I wrong! Everything plugs into the brick, and then all functions flow through the charging port, instead of the micro ports on the Surface tablet. This device saves a LOT of wear and tear on the Surface's ports because they all plug into the brick instead of dangling off the side, thus placing undue pressure on the ports. The power port is magnetic, so all that wear and tear is minimized. I LOVE IT! If you're THNKING about buying one, BUY IT! It works like a charm!!!Read full review...

Product works excellent with my MS Surface Pro

By far the best docking station I’ve used for any laptop I’ve owned. I only wish it had a HDMI port to avoid the need for an HDMI to display port or USB adapter.

Heavy but good

The whole thing is a bit heavy. I wish that you could use the hub with having to have the power brick plugged in. It has been reliable and works as intended. You do need to scan for windows updates while it is plugged in to get the proper drivers for it for it to work reliably.Read full review...
