The kings of Saturday mornings!

The summer of 1974 saw a popular trio emerge onto the American music scene. They were Bill, Mark and Brett - the Hudson Brothers. In September of that year, CBS presented "The Hudson Brothers Razzle Dazzle Show", a half-hour program filled with music and comedy, and shown on Saturday mornings. Although it lasted for only a total of 16 episodes, the series was very entertaining, featuring a unique cast of supporting characters. The Hudsons performed songs from their current album released at that time, "Hollywood Situation", featuring the hit single, "So You Are A Star". Also featured are the classic sketches that were a special part of the show, including "Chucky Margolis", the kid who lived in the basement of his own house. Among the other cast are Scott Fisher as Fabulous Freddie, executive vice president in charge of children's programming; Rod Hull and his Emu; Ted Zeigler, Billy Van, Peter Cullen, Murray Langston and Freeman King as Space Cadets; Avril Chown as Lady Patricia; and, of course, The Bear. Among the writers who contributed to this show were Chris Bearde and Allan Blye who helped to create and produce the classic 1968 Comeback Special starring Elvis Presley. This complete series is available on 3 DVDs. Special bonus features include sketches from the Hudson Brothers summer CBS series, plus more "Chucky Margolis". Once called "the kings of Saturday mornings" by John Lennon himself, "The Hudson Brothers Razzle Dazzle Show" will take you back to another place and time in television history. 40 years later, it is still a whole lot fun.Read full review...

Relive the 1970's with the Hudson Brothers on this 3-disc DVD set... I did!

The time period was late 1974 / early 1975. I was only 4 1/2 years old, and (being your typical youngster) had my favorite Saturday morning TV shows. One of them was "The Hudson Brothers Razzle Dazzle Show". Over time, memories of this show had slipped into obscurity... that is, until I found an old audio cassette tape. Captured on this tape were sounds of The Hudson Brothers performing "Hollywood Situation", Fabulous Freddy conducting a fire drill and The Bear as the private detective. My 4 1/2 year old voice could be heard in the background laughing as Rod Hull tries to teach his Emu how to finger paint. I knew I had to find these shows again. And I did... all packaged nicely in this 3 disc DVD set. I watched these shows and relived my childhood once again. And at the same time, I watched these shows as an adult, and realized that this series was a unique blend of bad lip-syncing, repetitive formats and cleverly written comedy routines. True, this series is "dated" (typical 70's hairstyles, clothing, music...) and the format was overdone. Yet, it contains a lot of elements that are lacking in today's entertainment such as cleverly written comedy, sight gags, tongue-in-cheek humor, parodies and other good wholesome fun ("including the kitchen sink", as stated in the Razzle Dazzle Wrap Up song played in every episode!)

Now, all I'm waiting for now is for someone to release on DVD the complete series of The Mac Davis Show.... then my trips down memory lane would be complete!
