A Documentary As A Blockbuster Hit?

Hardly ever have I considered watching a documentary on the big screen. I didn't this time either catching it for the first time on DVD. Beautifully cinematography is the key to this story of the March of the Penguins. Makes me wish I had seen it at the theater.

This movie was splendid. Maybe not quite far reaching enough for a family film, there is a lot of graphic scenes, although these are the graphic scenes of nature for real as opposed to the graphic violence on today's television. It orchestrates the march these penguins take and the trials they go through just to mate and continue their species. I don't think anyone can argue the fact that this movie clearly shows that these penguins probably are on the tops for the most dedicated parents ever.

It can be boring. Be forewarned there are areas in this film that do drag if you don't catch interest in facts and documentaries.Read full review...

Amazing!

March of the Penguins is such a surprising tale of the amazing life that these Penguins have. The difficulty was astounding and something that kept me glued to the story. I purchased one for each of my children to watch and share with their grandchildren who I am sure will also be mesmerized with the story. Entertainment from a new perspective

Don't walk into this movie expecting it to be like any other ordinary film you would go to the theater to watch. This is more a documentary style movie. If you're like me, you might be turned off by that fact, but don't turn this movie down just becuase of that. You'd really be missing out. It is thoroughly entertaining while also being highly educational. I learned so many interesting facts about penguins, and about how little we know about the world around us. These penguins somehow know intuitively when it is time to gather to their breeding grounds. They all do it at precisely the same time, even on the same day, and often the same HOUR. They always find their way to exactly the same spot even though the polar ice is continually changing. Completely amazing. Watch it.Read full review...

The story of Life on this planet

This movie can put us in our place. When we think life is tough, when we think our problems are overwhelming, when we have a litany of complaints, a story like this gives us some perspective.

March of the Penguins is very much a testament to the evolutionary process. The emperor penguin is a bird that cannot fly, walks awkwardly and with difficulty, but swims well. To reproduce, it must leave the sea and traverse some 70 miles of frozen antarctic wasteland several times, endure extreme cold and wind, and go without eating for months at a time. Many do not succeed in producing young, and many others do not survive the trip, but they all fully dedicate themselves to the effort. Without such inborn drive, such willingness to sacrifice themselves, these animals could not exist.

Hats off to the men who made this movie, since that took much dedication as well. The camera work is marvelous, and the story well told. It's hard to go wrong having Morgan Freeman narrate it.

The ironic postscript to the tale of these penguins is how their numbers have dramatically fallen since the movie was filmed. Apparently, environmental changes due to global warming are threatening their survival. While the emperor penguins have survived for millions of years in the harshest environment on the earth's surface, they are now facing destruction because of man's growing presence on that planet.Read full review...

great film about great animals

March of the Penguins was an extraordinarily well-done piece documenting the annual reproductive cycle of the emperor penguin, itself an amazing feat. The story and cinematography are both excellent, making this probably the best documentary I've ever seen. Morgan Freeman serves as a solid narrator, and Alex Wurman provides a beautiful score. The National Geographic CritterCam special feature is also very interesting.

My biggest complaint would be how the penguins are anthropomorphized a bit, with the "love" theme and all - thankfully, this theme is only actually mentioned in the movie a few times, namely the beginning and end of the movie. It's a rather silly addition to a serious natural phenomenon, especially considering that we don't really know if the penguin parents feel any love for each other even if they feel a parental sort of love for their chick. Also, the mating segment is incredibly sappy. And a few lines surrounding various penguin deaths are unnecessarily euphemized - the penguins apparently do not die but rather "fall asleep" and "fade away".Read full review...

This was a great film make sure you get the Widescreen Edition.
The Filming is top notch and Morgan Freeman as the narrator cant be beat.
The movie follows thousands of emperor penguins on there jouney to breed and raise their young.The jouney takes weeks of marching in single file across some of the Darkest,driest and coldest continent on the plantet.I took the hole family to see the movie when it first came out and they all enjoyed it very much.I learned alot about the Emperor Penguin from this movie it is a very educational film.
From 38 to 5 years old all had a great time.
The DVD has a few special features on it Like a Classic Looney tunes Cartoon

March of the Penguins

I bought this movie because I had heard good things about it, and my significant other wanted to see it. I bought first the Chinese version with English subtitles and then the American version with Morgan Freeman. Both versions were interesting. The Chinese version humanized the penguins and was probably more entertaining and pleasant to watch. I have learned, though, that giving wildlife human emotions is not necessarily scientifically correct. The American version was also interesting. The National Geographic, I believe, had something to do with this version. It was more documentary-oriented, and probably more scientifically correct.Read full review...

Excellent Documentary

If you are looking for a warm and fuzzy penguin tale for you and your family - this is not it. This is a documentary on the lives of Emperor penguins, and their lives are not easy!

I was very surprised kids have liked this movie. It is entertaining to be sure, but more for adults or kids who are older and interested in animals more than just as cuddly pets. To me it was a great way to show how life is for these animals and it should be shown in science class but it is harsh and real. There are births and deaths, social conduct and survival tactics - some of it is pretty.

As with all movies - get the widescreen edition. You miss so much when the film is cut to fit regular TVs, especially on something where the location has so much to do with the story.Read full review...
