Splatoon - The Shooter for People Who Hate Shooters

To say this isn't the average shooter would be an understatement. The game circles around a story mode and an online mode, the latter of which is more important for the game in general. Characters are more interested in being "fresh" than saving a princess or a kingdom or a galaxy. All in all, it's a bit of a strange title, especially coming from the Big N, but it highlights the fact that Nintendo can- and will- create new stuff. The characters are in their own way very endearing, dialogue is amusing, the gameplay is solid, and the graphics are excellent (I might even say gorgeous). My only major complaints are that the story quest is disappointingly short, although there are bonus items in each level for the completionist to come back and that if you like taking other people on in battle you need to stick with the online games. Local multiplayer is very limited. If Nintendo ever shuts down the servers for this game without patching in a game-changing update, Splatoon will one day be borderline useless software, and that is a liability for long term players. But that possibility seems years away, and for the time being, I'd recommend Splatoon to anyone who wants to try something new, or wants a shooter game without gratuitous violence, swearing, and innocence ruining kiddie gamers. The main objective is to join your team and cover the playing field in your color using a wide variety of weapons ranging from the obvious to the practically and delightfully ridiculous. Can't figure out multiplayer

Fun and fresh but is somewhat limited

The game only has two modes a single player which can be accessed from the hub and is an entirely separate beasts, and the multiplayer the heart of the game and without internet access the games becomes much more bare bones, the multiplayer is tons of fun but the stages you play on aren't set for a time before shuffling themselves so game play can get repetitive. The controls are wonderful and the gyros are surprisingly accurate, I wouldn't dream of playing without them. Amazing!

This game is wonderful. It is Nintendo's take on a 3rd person shooter and after playing it non-stop for a month, I can say that this is one of the best games I have ever played. It is an extremely creative game built around covering an entire map in ink, while also "splatting" opponents that get in your way. In the ranked game modes (available once you reach level 10), you have more focused objectives such as controlling a moving tower and guiding it towards the enemies base, or escorting a "rainmaker" weapon to the enemies base. There is nothing like a well-timed "inkstrike" or suction bomb onslaught to make your enemies free in terror. There is a great single player campaign that should take around 5-6 hours to complete and provides an easy way to acclimate to the motion gyro controls, which are highly recommended due to their superior precision for aiming. The online lobbies have been going strong, and there are plenty of North American, European, and Japanese players to keep the online-based multiplayer mode going for at least another year. The developers have released a ton of new weapons, maps, and gear for you to customize your Inkling, and almost limitless ways to customize your loadout to suit your playstyle. I love it! I used to play splatoon from my cousin's wii u, but finally managed to get my own! Sadly, I couldn't copy my save data onto my new wii (lvl 50 B+), but being able to start all over again seems cool (kinda I guess).

I've been playing rated battles and splatfests for a little over a month now... Totally fun and exciting! Tons of add -on clothing, abilities and styles. I like the feel of the game. Being disabled, I have trouble sometimes with shooters, but Nintendo made it family friendly. Work in your comfort zone and battle as high as your level can average. Good formula.

But I need to be honest too....there's only one critique; it needs an update to remedy the connection issues that crop up from time to time with many of the players.

As of today, the current update level is version 2.0.0 ...

I'm using a new official Nintendo LAN adapter with my router's DMZ set, correct port forwarding, and the whole nine yards... and my connection is finally stable now. But I've still lost matches when a fellow player **poof** disappears off the pad at the start of a match.

**Insert "colorful outburts" of panic**

It's bad because no one replaces him/her!
(A match of (4) -against- (3) players is not cool or fun, especially if you're on the short team!
Nintendo, please fix this tiny design issue ASAP!)

Other than that, it's a spectacular addition to the Wii U!

A Must Have Game!!!!!!!!!!

I got this for me and my daughter for Christmas. I'm 36 and she's 9 and this game is Awesome. I would definitely recommend this game. It's an all around paint war game. The levels are fun and you can accessorize you character. They even have a Splatfest competition every so often and you get to choose a team. You will not be disappointed with this game at all.
