Once again, Rhino records has truly succeeded with the "Billboard Top Rock & Roll Hits" CD series, classic songs that helped to shape an entire generation. For the 1963 volume, once again presented here are 10 of the best song selections from that year. The CD starts off, appropriately enough, with the number one song from the year, "Sugar Shack" by Jimmy Gilmer and the Fireballs; the surf and drag craze was in full swing with Jan and Dean's "Surf City"; girl group the Chiffons scored a big hit with "He's So Fine"; Leslie Gore was one of the decade's most popular female singers, having a huge hit song with "It's My Party"; another chart-topper was "If You Wanna Be Happy" from Jimmy Soul; the Portland, Oregon garage band made music history with their version of the rock anthem "Louie, Louie"; still more vocal excellence was featured in "Easier Said Than Done" by the Essex; brother-and-sister Nino Tempo & April Stevens hit the top ten with "Deep Pueple"; another girl group hit it big with "My Boyfriend's Back"; Rock And Roll hall-of-famers had one of their buggest hits with "Surfin' U.S.A.". This was the era when music was music and one could understand the words and enjoy the beat of a really good record. I have lots of oldie's on 78 and 8 track. Was just gre4at to get them on cd's.
