Good movie, a classic.

There should be a choice of widescreen view and full screen view on this and so many other DVD movies. I do not really like widescreen movies and widescreen television. Well, really good movie, a classic.Read full review...

Not a fan

Was really excited to watch this movie maybe if I went in with lower expectations it would have been better. The creature effects are awesome and fun to watch, they make it worth watching

Classic Sci-Fi at its Best

When I was a child, I was given a birthday gift by some close friends of my parents. They gave me a book--a Science Fiction anthology--as even then I was an avid reader (and Sci-Fi was and is my favorite reading material). One of my favorite stories in this outstanding anthology was 'Who Goes There?' by John Campbell. Imagine my delight when, years later, a movie based on this story came out. 'The Thing', directed by John Carpenter, is an absolutely great film version of this story, and isn't at all based on the earlier black and white 'The Thing from Another World' (?... or whatever it was called). The only "thing" they have in common is that a crew of men in a cold setting fight to survive against a powerful and very intelligent alien. In my opinion, John Carpenter's movie is much superior to the older film: it's simply a classic... great cast, award-winning and gruesome special effects, and a forlorn, creepy soundtrack to boot. I had owned this for years as a VHS tape; and of course, I just had to get it on DVD as well! This is at least a "must-see", if not "must-have", for any Sci-Fi and/or Horror buffs.Read full review...

DVD MOVIE : THE THING ( 1998 )

Directed by John Carpenter and staring Kurt Russel, this 1982 movie gleans only 1.5 stars from Leanard Maltin and yet, I LOVE THIS MOVIE ! I had the "modified for TV" version on tape for 20 years but this DVD with the original wide screen format is SO MUCH better. Why is it better ? The music ! Yes, what the movie lacks in artistic excellence it makes up for with some VERY CREEPY MUSIC which adds a chilling effect for the watcher ! I love it !
Plus, it is such a pleasure to be able to research such a movie on the internet and then use ebay and paypal to bring it to my mailbox with expedience and economy.

great classic

I luv this movie. John Carpenter directed a masterpiece. The plot seems simple but the character dynamics are what really make this movie special. Led by Kurt Russel, an American expedition team in the Artic makes an unbelievable discovery. Unknowingly, there discovery exposes them to a threat to the entire human population. This is not ur typical alien movie. This movie is full of suspense and will scare you and will keep you guessing from beginning to end. It has many moments that will make you turn your head cuz you thought you heard something. hahah You can't go wrong with this classic. If you've never seen it... do yourself a favor and pick it up. you won't be disappointed.Read full review...

Carpenter at his best ...

I've always had a fondness of this film. As a child, I remember seeing the box and wondering what the story entailed. Years later, having not seen it but having heard of its predecessor, I was delighted to see it in class (Horror/Fantasy Film). It was then then that I realized the greatness of this film. If you can't take body gore, it's not for you, but it's a wonderous tale of the happenings of an alien lifeform wreaking havoc in Antartica. A must-see for any horror fan.

I bought it so I could have it in my own personal collection. It's that good.

One of My All Time Cult Horror Classics!

Even some 20 years later, John Carpenter's "The Thing" is in a class by itself in this day and age of CGI ridden horror "B" movies. Its suspensful plot, terrifying storyline, hauntingly realistic special effects, phenominal acting, and chilling soundtrack all combine to create a one of a kind true horror thriller that if re-released, even today, would no doubtedly be a box office hit! Although I've seen it dozens of times, to this day I still cannot watch it alone. It is without a doubt, one of my all time cult horror classics!Read full review...

Still holds up today

A very intense and frightening classic horror film of the 80s. Contains a LOT of gore though, so its R rating is definitely well-earned.
