Good but not Great

The Super Nintendo is home to some of the best RPG’s ever made. The 7th saga is not one of these RPG’s, but it is definitely a very good one.

Graphically, the 7th Saga looks great; all of the characters are detailed and look great; the environments also look great. The battles also have a 3D look to them. Aside from the graphics, the 7th Saga also employs some unique features that make it stand out from typical RPGs. The first thing is that in dungeons and on the world map, your crystal ball shows you where enemies are roaming (it works sort of like a radar). This is a useful feature because you will often-times be able to avoid dangerous battles.

Another interesting feature is that in the beginning of the game you choose which character you want to play as (a robot, a knight, a dwarf, a sorcerer, etc). Throughout the game you will have the opportunity to meet up with other characters and they will help you on your journey. You will also meet characters who want to kill you which results in an extremely difficult boss fight. This brings me to my major complaint about this game; it is extremely difficult. No matter how strong your armor is or how high your level is, this game is still very challenging. The dungeons and bosses are very difficult and require a lot of level grinding, which can be painful.

Despite the extreme difficulty, I really enjoy this game and I think that it is one of the best RPGs on the SNES (but not ever made). I would highly recommend this game to RPG fans.

Pros:
- Good graphics.
- Multiple characters to choose from.
- Meet up with other characters throughout the game.

Cons:
- Can be extremely difficult.

Great game, completely underrated

For all true RPG gamers, this game is a must for your collection. These days, almost every RPG you play makes it so easy for you, ie. FFX, where your health completely rejuvenates at every save point! Games such as this one are so classic and old school that they make it a true challenge. It's one of the hardest games I've ever played; if you hate leveling up and being strategic and having to THINK in battles, this game isn't for you. But this is why I love it. You're not just sitting there and "kill, kill, kill," but you must think or else you'll never get farther.

Leveling up does great, but it doesn't always cut it. Strategy is the main key to this game. Think about this...you're stuck on a boss character, so you go level up for six hours and come back, and low and behold, the boss has also leveled up and is even harder! This is why no matter how strong you are, the battles will still be a challenge. This is sort of annoying at times, but overall makes the game much more smart.

Sorry for rambling, let me tell you a little about the game's story. You get to choose between 7 characters in the beginning. It took me a few times to actually find out what character I liked the best. They all have certain advantages and disadvantages. For instance, Esuna (female elf) is extremely powerful with magic and has great agility, but is so phsyically fragile that one blow can often kill her. Quite the opposite of Lux (the robot) who has very strong defense and requires no armor, but isn't very good with magic and has slow speed. Your mission is to go out and find the seven runes scattered over Ticondera. Whoever finds them all will gain a huge amount of power and will be able to control the world.

One of the neatest features in the game is that you can find the other 6 warriors looking for the runes in towns throughout the game. You can talk to these people and they will either want to become your companion, fight you, or just to say something silly. It's always wise to have a companion with you, and especially one that balances you out.

There's not much else to say, except that the game is extremely hard. It's always the little things though, so as your armor never gets strong enough, you don't gain levels fast enough, and most annoyingly, you can only carry up to 9 of each item at a time! (Think only 9 potions in a horrific dungeon!) But that is what makes up the beauty of the game. I definitely recommend it.

Just as I remember. Solid game.

Has some pioneering features and an abundance of replay value, as you can complete the game as one of several classes. It's not an easy game though. It can and probably will blindside you, lest you grind like Rowley. Not sure what this "better than expected" business is about. I knew exactly what I was buying.Read full review...

This is a great game worth at least a look.

The 7th Saga is one of the few rpg's for the SNES put out by Enix before their merger with squaresoft. Enix is the same company that brought us the Dragon Warrior/Quest series, and like squaresoft were known for putting out a quality product. The 7th Saga is no exception, but it does have one problem. You need to level grind a lot, this can be a problem only if your not patient. Try to keep in mind this was a common thing in rpg's of the time other than that it's really innovative and fun. You choose one of seven characters some of which appear as antagonists rather than just never being mentioned again. For the most part its a top down perspective like Zelda but when you enter battle it becomes an over the shoulder third person perspective. I bought this game because I love rpg's that try to bring something new to the table while still being well structured and it does not disappoint. It's just as good as any other rpg on the system if not better and I'd recommend it to everyoneRead full review...

The 7th Saga (Super Nintendo)

This game 7th Saga is a very good game for the people that like role playing games. There are many different characters you can choose to start your quest with. This game features easy saves and takes many days to finish and depending on which character you use it will have a different outcome. I have played this game many times and have liked it each time. This item also has a great resale value so play the game for free and resale it on Ebay.Read full review...

The 7th Sara for Super Nintendo

This is a pretty solid US title. However, I would not rank it among the classics made by Enix on the SNES such as Terranigma. The graphics are average. They could have put more thought into the surroundings. It reminded me of Phantasy Star 4 for the Sega Genesis. The character design is great. There are many characters to choose from. The controls are smooth, well for an RPG. But the character moves a t a faster pace vice his foot movement. The battle system is stereotypical of its time. Typical wait and hit. The scroll effect on the world map is awesome. I recommend this game its well worth a 15 dollar price tag and will keep you coming back. Please consider this highly overlooked game for some good classic entertainment.Read full review...

excellent game, early SNES RPG

oh, the hours i spent playing this game as as kid (we're talking over 15 years ago). for modern day games it looks horrible, the early 16 bit graphics and almost 8 bit sounding music and effects are laughable, but anyone who's played this game know that all of this is compensated by the great gameplay and fantastic story. a must have for RPG fans and a true SNES classic.
created by Enix well before they joined up with Square to become the massive company they are today.

7th saga

This was an rpg I enjoyed back in the day. Multiple characters and a decent story highlight this one.
Graphics are normal for the time and music is annoying as usual.
The hard progression through the game is what made this buy worthwhile.Read full review...
