Whacky Races!

Finally a DVD with the good ol' cartoons from the '60s! All the episodes, featuring Perfect Pete, Penelope Pitstop, the Slag Brothers, Professor Pat Pending, and, of course, Dick Dastardly and Muttley. I had a great evening with my kids, reminiscing of my days as a kid. Don't know when this one was produced, but it's a new DVD, not a film transfer, so the picture is clear, the music is, well, 60's cartoon music, but as originally recorded. The box has a faux cartoon cell on the cover, nicely done, with good pictures of the characters throughout. Three disks total. Worth every penny, enjoying these old classics! Now if I could just find Super Chicken ...Read full review...

Not As Good As I Remembered, But Not Bad

When I was a kid, I couldn't wait on Saturday mornings for the Wacky Races to come on. My sentimental favorite was the ConvertaCar driven by Professor Pat Pending and my pet hate was Peter Perfect's Turbo Terrific - but I harbored a sneaking admiration for the Double-Zero Mean Machine driven by Dick Dastardly and Muttley the Snickering Hound. The absurd road rallies the Wacky Racers ran in lent themselves to rule-bending and cheating, and not merely by the show's villainous duo in the Mean Meachine. As with his avatar Wile E. Coyote, Dastardly would go to extremes in an attempt to win by cheating using ingenious plots and bizarre devices worthy of the master, and of course would never win.

Except for the times that he actually did. In the pilot episode, he crossed the finish line and won by a nose in a photo finish and a cloud of dust if you view the finish in frame advance mode; but as aired, the show's version of the finish had him advancing the Mean Machine's nose with a scissors extender. Personally, I think Dick got robbed. And there was the time he decided to race honestly while everyone ELSE cheated like mad, and he STILL lost because the judges wouldn't call the rest of the Racers on their actions! Okay, the premise doesn't work as well if the bad guy wins sometimes, but still...

This series, like The Great Race before it, is a forerunner of the cult classic racing movie The Gumball Rally and the horrid Cannonball Run movies it inspired. The animation is 1960s Hanna-Barbera simple, sometimes Tom Terrific simple it feels like, not in it with what Warner Brothers and Disney were doing and nowhere near as spohisticated as the current state of the art. But if you want to while away a few hours with an enduring, endearing villain and a bunch of the screwiest racing cars ever conceived, Wacky Races will keep you nicely entertained.

Wacky is right

An animated depiction of those Manificent Men in their Junt up Jelopies.
Styreotipical characters racer their way acrossed rural America at the chance for the title of the "Worlds Wackiest Racer". As Dick Destardly comes up with diabolical scemes to eliminate the other racers instead of racing them. Proving again that cheaters never win. The over played Styreotyped characters are halirious; as Penelope Pitstop is the damsel in distress, Peter Perfect is the spoiled rich well mannered hero, Dick Destardly as the Destardly sneaky cheater, and other character depicting all corners of society. These short run versions are fun to watch and keeps you wondering what will be next and who will win this time.Read full review...

Wacky Races

Wacky Races is a blast from the past with lots of great childhood memories. My niece Lauren and nephew Andrew really enjoyed it as well! Everybody loves Muttley. The color and animation are great. While this does have lots of characters they are easy to learn for children and not confusing. A fun way to watch the races are to pick a favorite driver and cheer for them to win every race just like you would a NASCAR race. Just don't pick Dick Dastardly,
he comes up short every race.

WACKY RACES! ...THE 1960'S INSPIRATION FOR MARIO KART? LOL....

Fun colorful cartoon racers, hilariously sabotaging each other to win, cheating with short-cuts and sneaky tactics and careening into laugh-out loud crashes! Wacky Races was ahead of it's time in more ways than one. THE ADVENTURES OF PENELOPE PITSTOP, DASTARDLY AND MUTTLEY, and CAPTAIN CAVEMAN AND THE TEEN ANGELS are all spin-off cartoon shows from this one very cool cartoon show!Read full review...
