Collateral (DVD, 2004)

Good performances by Tom Cruise and Jamie Foxx in this film. Max is a LA cab driver with all sorts of fantasy ideas of starting his own limo service, "Island Limo". The problem is that he has been planning it for twelve years with no actual date in sight. Max picks up Annie (Jada Pinkett Smith), an Assistant DA, and takes her to the Federal Building. He flirts with her and she likes his demeanor and personality. She gives him her card.

Another fare gets in, Vincent, who tells Max that he has five different stops to make and an early flight out of LAX in the morning. He asks Max to hang with him for the night and offers him a bonus for getting him to the airport on time, a total of $600. Max says yes, not having any idea what he was getting into.

At the first stop, Vincent gets out Max waits in the alley for him. Suddenly a body falls out of a window onto the cab. Not fully understanding what happened, Max tells Vincent that this guy fell out of the window and hit the cab. Vincent tells him that he fell because he was shot, and that they had to put the body in the trunk. Max wants no part of this, but Vincent makes it pretty clear that it was not a request. Max is now Vincent's prisoner. He realizes that Vincent is a hit man and his five stops are going to be his victims. Unable to get away, Max has no other options but to do what Vincent says. Max's mother is in the hospital, and Vincent makes it very clear that he will kill her if Max doesn't cooperate. Max pretty much figures that Vincent is going to kill him too when his work is done.

Victor is killing all of the people with anything to do with a major drug lord case that is going to trial tomorrow. Max finally decides that he had nothing to lose and tried to get away. He wrecked the cab and got away from Vincent. Inside of Vincent's brief case, Max sees that his last victim is Annie the District Attorney, the prosecutor of the drug lord case.

Cops show up and try to handcuff Max, but he fights the cop and gets away. He has to warn Annie about Vincent. Now Max realizes that he picked up Vincent after letting Annie out. Vincent was probably there to kill Annie first, but she was running late. Max tries to warn her, but the cell phone is dead. He gets to her building and is able to warn her just barely before Vincent shows up. Max is able to slightly wound Vincent with the policeman's gun, and he and Annie are running for the subway. In a cat-and-mouse chase, Max and Annie are just steps away from being caught by Vincent. Finally, trapped on the same train with nowhere to go, in a last ditch shootout on the subway train, Max mortally wounds Vincent. Both out of bullets, they sit across from each other and Vincent dies. Max and Annie get off, and Vincent continues down the line.

CRUISE IN RARE FORM

While Foxx fans won`t be let down by his (jamie) performance, this vehicle is in Cruise Control all the way ! Tom Cruise is perfectly cast as the thinking man`s hitman. The movie`s high lights are when Cruise is on screen...killing people! Jada Pinkett Smith turns in a servicable performance as Foxx`s love interest. While this film is about a night in the life of a hit man and the taxi driver(Foxx) who drives him around, it seems that with every conversation between the two men, a life time of secrets and inner thoughts are revealed. Cruise and Foxx play those scenes with Oscar worthy depth. Good film. See it!!!Read full review...

"To Live & Die in L.A."

This film is an extension of "Heat" (1995). The plot & characters are different, but the setting remains similar. An action-packed thriller with a message of hope (one can rise beyond their circumstances).Read full review...

Masterpiece!!!! - Absolute brilliant thriller!!

Ok guys, what we have here is not just one of the best suspense, thriller films, not quite one of the best 2004 movies, but indeed one of the best movies ever made!

The greatness of this movies can't be described in words, you gotta se it. The film focuses on Vincent and Max, Vincent is a hitman hired to take some witnesses down, and Max is a taxi driver, Vincent hire Max for the whole night to do his job and get to the airport fast enough, but you know, shit happens...

Most of the movie the action is set inside the cab, with conversations between max and Vincent, they talk about life, experiences, universe, you get to see both points of view, and then you realize that their relationship gets deeper, it's not just a sociopath and his collateral inside a cab preparing for the slaughter, there's jokes, hangouts, and even parent visits, while Vincent prefers to think that as his job, Max condemns it.

The atmosphere created is outstanding, 95% of the movie happens at night, just the beginning that don't, and with it they really got to make the best of a metropolitan city night, and along with the excellent atmosphere created, the soundtrack contribute to set the perfect mood, simply amazing!

The acting is stunning, I always liked Tom Cruise's job, but with this he made nothing less than the best acting of his whole carrer, we can say the same for Jamie Foxx, Jada Pinkett Smith was just great and Mark Ruffalo did a fantastic job too! And Acting turns out to be not much of a problem when the plot is as magnificent as this is, just pure original and nicelly though storyline!

After watching it in VHS, I had to buy it, and I did, yes I did, I got the special 2 DVD set, and expect to buy the soundtrack pretty soon!

What if you were Collateral Damage!

Tom Cruise gives an excellent performance in this movie. His "matter of fact" character with minor variations provides for a unique criminal subject to study during the movie. However, Jamie Foxx's performance in my estimation overshadows the ever popular Cruise. Foxx plays a very convincing cab driver pulled into the fray of Cruise's business with Foxx and his life along for the rides as consequential "collateral damage" so to speak of Cruise's mission. Cruise plays the role he was intended to play and does a magnificent job in doing so yet it's Jaime Foxx that makes this movie. This movie is excellent and I give it a 5 out of 5 stars. Go along for the ride as Max goes from a meager cab driver with dreams of a limo company to the guy who ultimately saves the day because he's seen too much and just can't let the scene play out without doing something, anything... Does he save the day? Is the cost worth it? Watch the movie...it IS worth it!Read full review...
